introducing potty

i have bought a potty and my daughter is almost 18 months old. she really does not like sitting on the potty already. i haven’t been trying to get her to do a wee on the potty just fully clothed showing her how to sit on the potty and she hates it. we have put her bunny toy and dolls on the potty and me and dad have sat on the potty congratulating each time and she shouts NO. how do i go about just getting her used to sitting on the potty?

I introduced a potty at about 16 months and my little boy was not interested at all and would cry when he was anywhere near it! Then all of a sudden I just left it sat in the living room and he started grabbing a book and going and sitting on it! I would sit next to him and read a book then stand him up and take his trousers off and sit him back on it so he could get used to it and now he’s goes and brings it over with a book and pulls on his trousers so I just do that. He has only ever used it successfully once but I’m not worried about that! I just want him to get used to it and have the choice on whether he wants to use it or not!

Just have it available. 18 months is still very early.

@Phoebe she definitely is starting to come round to it. when i sat on it she clapped this evening so fingers crossed 🤞🏻

@Natalie yeah i know it is quite early. i want to establish potty training to a good point before she starts nursery in september because i will be studying midwifery at uni so can’t just take a week off to start potty training. i figured the earlier i introduce just sitting on the potty the more likely she will be at a stage where nursery can continue it when shes there as well

@ellie 🤍 potty training is more about when they are ready instead of what works with a schedule unfortunately. We had a potty in the room from my daughter being young (6 months or something). She started asking to sit on it at 20 months but we only just cracked potty training at 2.5

@Natalie shes showing signs for a while. i know it can’t be rushed but i was just hoping that she would pick it up sometime before 2 years i wouldn’t know if i didn’t try. its just if we don’t initiate it she will be 28 months when i have time off over Christmas to initiate it which probably isn’t a good time for it with the busy time that christmas is. i just worry about it so much!

@ellie 🤍 my daughter showed signs early too. We did it over Christmas and it worked well. My daughter turned 29 months the day we started.

@Natalie did she pick it up quite quickly? i think i will have to tell people were having a quiet christmas at home this year if so 😅 and heating up with no nappy

@ellie 🤍 generally yes. She did have a week of regression at about 4-5 weeks in (only at nursery really) but overall she's been doing really well. We had people over Christmas day and were out boxing day but started on 27th and she was off nursery until 2nd January

What are the signs of being ready? My daughter is 17m and she is telling us when she poops. She also goes to the changing mat when she’s wet. We’ve ordered a potty but I need to start researching what to do next!

We had a potty from 15 months and at first she loved it and would sit on it and wee and ask to sit on it all the time and then a couple months later she did a poo on it and it freaked her out and she wouldn't go near it for ages so we ended up getting just a seat for the toilet which she much preferred maybe from seeing us use the toilet, we did eventually get back to the potty to just use to sit on the toilet and have her potty next to me and ask her if she wanted to sit to and then jsut left it in the living room so she could do what she wanted with it herself without mentioning anything to her
