Tongue tie

Found out Friday that my 2 week old has suspected tongue tie. Put in for a referral but could be 8-10 weeks before it gets resolved! Just wondering if anyone has any tips for breast feeding with a suspected tongue tie? Sometimes we latch great and other times it takes ages and baby gets really upset and frustrated and it’s so hard, especially at night. Just hoping the correction will make things easier 😭

What position are you doing? My little one preferred the rugby ball whilst she had tongue tie. I think it’s all trial and error until it’s resolved but please remember you are doing amazing just by being a mum let alone breast feeding! It’s so hard when little one gets frustrated and there’s nothing you can do, but coming from someone who has shed a lot of tears over breast feeding, you are doing great and you and your baby will get there! We luckily got told about our little girl’s tongue tie on day 2 but the wait is crazy! We went with the private midwives who came out to our house within 7 days. Ruth was so nice and reassuring. My husband and I were really nervous but it was over in a few seconds and she was more upset about being swaddled than the actual procedure! We now have no problems with latching and it was so worth it.

Thank you @Chloe that’s so lovely of you to say 😭 definitely cried a lot over feeding the past couple days! Mainly doing cradle, but trying rugby where I can just struggle to get us both comfy especially at night but gonna keep trying!

There’s just so much pressure isn’t there especially from ourselves. I just keep moving pillows around to help but you’ll get there honestly. As a first time mum I’m honestly just winging it and hoping for the best. Look at how far you’ve come already especially getting a great latch at times with a tongue tie!

My first had tongue tie. If you can afford to go private this is another option. It cost us £200 for the tongue tie assessment and to have it corrected. Which isn't cheap especially considering the appointment was less than 10 minutes long but they can see you a lot quicker than on the NHS. It's really hard and frustrating feeding baby with a tongue tie and latch issues, you are doing great. Is there any peer support breastfeeding groups near you that you can go along to?

@Chloe you’re so sweet thank you ❤️

@Jess thanks so much 🥺 I’m definitely considering if we can afford it privately cos waiting over 2 months is not ideal 😭 I’ll look into support groups good idea! Xx

If you are open to it, I would recommend nipple shields in the interim. My midwife suggested them for my son's tongue tie and they have been amazing
