Is IVF scary?

Asking for a friend. She is trying to have a baby through IVF, they have been trying for the past 8-9 years, had two miscarriages, and this is their last hope. She and her husband both are incredibly scared, I feel helpless. I want to understand how everyone’s experience has been to better support them. Can you please share your experience? As a friend how can I help them?

Yes it’s scary, practically and emotionally, but it’s also a relief when you start (from my point of view) as then you’re doing something actively to help the situation. It doesn’t get loads easier even if there’s a positive pregnancy test because then you’re worried about every next little step. There’s so many numbers and statistics it’s quite overwhelming and all consuming, but it’s been worth it for me and I’d do it again! We didn’t have many people we could talk to so your chum should get on this app and connect with others TTC via IVF - it’s such a great support network and she can ask loads of questions informally as well as from their chosen clinic/expert. I don’t think there’s any magic you can bring but just being there and asking how they’re doing is the best support!

IVF is an emotional rollercoaster and hard to say how each person will navigate it. The best thing you can do is ask your friend how she wants to be supported through it. I found talking helped me but I know others that feel privacy is better for them. I would definitely recommend this app if she doesn’t know about it as it made me feel less alone. Support from family and friends is great, but talking to people going through the same as you brings a different level of comfort. I hope she has a successful outcome 💞
