Discipline

My child informed me yesterday that he was told to sit in the office and not go to recess because he was play fighting with his friend. Should the school notify you when your child is disciplined, or is it normal practice to not inform parents? Do I need to say something? He missed his entire recess for play fighting with a friend. When they both tried to explain that it was cordial, the lady in the office said “they could not be trusted”.

I’m a teacher in the UK so it may be different over here but we have a behaviour policy at my school - it outlines the steps of sanctions and what’s appropriate for what kind of behaviour. E.g. if a child did something against the rules, they’d miss 5 mins of breaktime (not the whole lot!) and then if it happened again it’d be 10 mins etc. if something so serious happened that they missed their whole breaktime we’d have to log it on our internal safeguarding system. As a teacher, I only inform parents of sanctions if another child has been hurt of if the behaviour is unusual / seriously disruptive or rude.

Do schools in Canada have any policies available on their website? Either way, sounds like a big reaction to a play fight. But also, children might misunderstand, forget or bend the truth so might be worth asking the teacher x

No, usually the parents are not informed unless it’s something really serious

Where I am, play fighting is still not allowed as it can still result in injuries and kids are made aware of this all the time by staff. It’s pretty common to lose recess privileges but I don’t think the school would bother notifying you unless a bigger issue happened or there were larger consequences. Losing a single recess isn’t that big of a deal that most parents don’t need to be notified

Personally I would ask questions. Was this their first time play Fighting. Did you tell them to stop and what was their reaction. I would be mad if they take away the entire recess for my kid take 10 mins but not the tire recess
