Regression

Hi everyone. I’m having a really hard time. I started EC potty training at 8 months old. My baby took to it naturally, it was going so well. I was already very in tune with her schedule, catching 7 pees a day, and since starting we have caught 100% of poops in the toilet. Recently she started curling up away from the toilet. I try to be patient and positive and encourage her to sit, ask nicely to squat, and get very happy and praise when she sits down. But she won’t stay sat. She wants to stand on the potty. I have only been able to catch some pees here and there. At first, she would pee almost instantly any time she sat on the potty, now it can take 5-10 or more minutes of sitting on the potty before she finally tinkles, or won’t pee on the potty at all. I know that potty training regressions are normal and unavoidable regardless of what age your baby is when you start. The transition from diaper to toilet is never easy. I’m regretting not starting sooner, 4-6 months is when I’ll start for our next child. But we are less than a month into this journey. Every fail to potty on the toilet, every time she stands and pees on me or on the floor instead of in the pot, every time I change a diaper compounds the feelings of failure, and I’m getting discouraged. I give her toys, show her books, offer random objects to distract her, I praise and clap and get excited with successes, I try harder than anything to stay calm and patient, I try to have her sit in different positions, nothing is working and it seems to be getting worse. What am I missing? Is this normal? How long will it last? Should I take a break or continue? How can I get through it? I am so tired of changing 12+ diapers per day, but at this point my goal of 1 successful pee on the toilet is somehow becoming even more taxing. Any advice is appreciated.

Ya we've had a million regressions. Depends on your kid too. I think some people just ditch the diapers and deal with the mess until it gets better. I've gone back and forth because I don't have the energy to change 7 underwear a in 1hr sometimes. No advice. We're at 18months now. It's a bit of a different ball game because he knows he's supposed to go on the toilet but sometimes he's just too interested in other things and ends up going in his pants.

@Annie yeah that’s what I’ve been thinking too with mind that she probably just finds the whole sitting on the potty quite boring lol when did you start pottying?

How old is your little one? Congratulations on all your catches! 100% poops caught is really great! The no poopy diapers is my absolute favorite thing about EC! Have you tried giving baby a little more independence with pottying? Also a little bit of diaper free time can help too. Teach baby how to sit on the potty, pull pants down, wipe up, pull pants up. For some diaper free time make a mess safe area for the two of you to sit for a bit. Then when she steps off the potty you can wait for another signal or a leak before sitting her back on the potty. Potty regressions happened to us a bunch too.

Started at 6ish months. It was smooth sailing until he started walking at 12 months.

Don't worry I started at 12 mo with easy catches so even if you take a break can still be fine to start again later. Is she truing to stand up or walk? Some toy or book to keep her interested sat down or squeezy glittery toy to look at (just for potty) may help. I started when my LO just started walking and he didn't want to sit for anything so I held a bucket of warm soapy water over his lap and let him play with the bubbles which eventually worked. I only did 1-4 easy catches per day till 15mo then did an observation day and caught all but 2 so he has been commando or training pants at home since then and at 17mo has taken himself to potty if bottomless. Its so worth it just to avoid nappy change fights and get poop in the potty
