My one month old is having green poop. Exclusively breastfed. Is this normal?

Breastfed baby poop is generally a mustard colour, it could be normal for them but it could be they’re not getting enough of the fatty hind milk. Do you swap breasts quite regularly during feeds?

@Emma So she doesn’t take enough milk in one go. She takes around 30-40ml then dozes off, wakes up if moved or after like 10 mins and the continues. Breastfeeding is a little challenging these days. She doesn’t latch, seems like the boob is just hanging in the mouth. she doesn’t close her mouth/grasps the nipple, keeps on crying so I offer her a bottle.

Hey, recommend getting a stool lactose test done. Also, is she cold /getting over a cold ?

@Honey no cold

That’s could be what is the cause then, it can be quite common if they’re not getting enough hind milk. Do you have a local breastfeeding helpline you could call for some support? Nipple shields could help too in the mean time if she’s struggling to latch. Breastfeeding is super challenging I’m with you on that, it’s hard work, particularly those first few months. It does get easier though I promise, hang in there and if it’s something you really want to continue with I’d definitely reach out to your midwife. Mine was amazing when I was struggling to get my daughter to latch and probably saved me from giving up with it altogether.

@Emma I did some research and I found that she might not be getting enough hind milk. She feeds for a few minutes and dozes off. Then wakes up hungry after 10-20 mins and u feed her again. Since 5:30 pm I have been feeding her and it’s 10:30 now.

@Emma I will talk to a lactation consultant. Maybe she can help.

Could be a diary allergy. My little ones poo was green and smelt awful and he is allergic to diary and soy. Xx
