Tongue Tie

We’ve just had a tongue tie referral- frustratingly it took me asking them to check it for them to actually listen to me- but we’ve been told at least a 2 week wait for the appointment. I’ve heard some people not even getting a reply in 4 weeks!!! Has anyone else gone for tongue tie through NHS, what was the wait time like? Just wondering if it’s worth me going private but it’s extortionate 🫠🫠

We’ve been given an appointment and baby will be 5 weeks and 5 days after they cancelled my referral as I’m BF and baby was putting on weight 😣. I think it depends on your hospital and how busy they are x

I was referred yesterday and I’ve had a phone call today and I’ve got an appointment for next Wednesday! Depends how the baby is rated to be referred xx

We were told 8-10 weeks for an appointment but luckily we’ve got an appointment 2 and a bit weeks from referral x

We were seen within two weeks of birth (the midwife made the referral straight away)

Not any help with the NHS waiting time but we went private & it was £150, our little one was seen within a few days of my enquiry

With my first, I hadn’t a referral at 2 weeks and was seen and hadn’t cut at 4 weeks. I left several voicemails as had no idea of wait times and everyday day was killing me. It was so tough. Even managing for 4 weeks was brutal and can’t imagine if we hadn’t found it and I hadn’t kept asking questions. This time one of the first questions I had was does he have a tongue tie?! He did but not as aggressive as my girls and as second time feeding my supply/boobs were probably overcompensating. They made the referral the day after he was born but the community midwife said people had been waiting 4+ weeks and I just thought no, not again! So booked a next day private appointment with a tongue tie midwife. It was £270 so expensive but for me worth it and she was good.

Our referral went in yesterday but I’m worried about how long it will take to be seen. Wondering if going private is better!?

@Lauren my little ones tongue tie appointment is next week and she’ll be 5 weeks and 5 days and I’m breastfeeding. Did you notice a difference in feeding? I’ve persevered for this long so hoping it helps our journey

Ours was picked up in hospital at 9 days old and he was booked in for 10 days time, they have a weekly clinic at our hospital. It made a difference straight away but then was still a learning curve - I was concerned and accessed lots of local support groups, someone told me that he needed to relearn how to use his tongue muscle and that helped me realise we were making progress!

Thanks guys! I’m frustrated as it wasn’t even checked from anyone so shes now nearly 6 weeks old. I’m BF and she’s plateaued in weight feeling super guilty. I am in agony with it and just about ready to give up so I’m really hoping the referral is quick. I think I’ll wait a few weeks before I start considering other options

@Annabel you’re doing amazing preserving with BF. In hospital we were told he didn’t have tongue tie, wasn’t until we went to a feeding clinic when he was 2 weeks old that we were told he had tongue tie! I’m BF as well and it’s hard work 🥲

@Abi thankyou lovely! It really is! I spend most feeds in tears 😢

@Annabel could you try pumping for feeds & then give a bottle?, I did this while we waited for my little ones tongue tie to be cut & also gave some time for my nipples to recover as it was agony to feed too. It’s so hard when it’s so painful to keep going but it’s all worth it in the end

Ours was only checked as we were readmitted for severe jaundice and when we left NICU he wouldn't feed from me anymore. I don't understand why it's not a basic check for all babies! It sounds like you're doing incredibly @Annabel . It really helped me to go to breastfeeding groups and get some advice as well as positive support from people who "get it". Good luck x

Honestly go private, they told me my baby had a tongue tie that wasn’t bad at all, the lady who I went to private said it was a really bad one since it was right at the front and she couldn’t use 95% of her tongue. The £200 it cost was worth it, my baby was more relaxed straight away

It depends on the trust. In our area the waiting list is so long I was told 'its not worth being referred'. This was with my first 3 years ago but I spoke to the infant feeding team recently and she said it's not changed. We went privately for him, which was £200 for the assessment and tongue tie to be cut which in all was only a 10 minutes appointment so yes very expensive. But could be seen within a few days of contacting them and it meant we could get the tie sorted which we couldn't have done under the NHS.

Had to wait 13 days , was picked up day 1. I wish we just paid privately as his tie was almost 100% and needed a double snip so would have saved myself a lorra lorra pain with feeding lol

We were told that our little boy had a ‘slight tongue tie’ by a midwife when he was a few days old. But she said as long as he’s feeding there wasn’t an issue. Can I ask what the signs were that is was a problem? Im wondering if it’s worth getting a second opinion. We’re formula feeding but he seems stressed during his feed, I’m wondering if it could be connected. Thank you xx

@Heather she isn’t gaining weight as she should, lots of pain with feeding, when she opens her mouth to feed she doesn’t open it much, when she does feed she clicks with her tongue! She often falls asleep feeding because she sucks so frantically!! She feeds really frequently and is uncomfortable between feeds- she’s gassy/refluxy too which I think links
