Hey, so my second baby didn’t pass the hearing test in both ears in the hospital. Not sure where you’re based but I’m in south wales. They even tried a different second test and he still failed. I felt awful but a couple weeks later we were sent a letter to attend a hospital apt and the same test was carried out again…he passed. It’s very common for babies not to pass first time round. Also c section babies are more likely to fail the hearing test due to the mucus build up if this applies to you. Try not to worry if yours hasn’t passed, even though I know it is worrying. If mine hadn’t passed the second time at the hospital then we would have been referred but I’m not sure what it would entail sorry x
My baby didn't pass the first time, was told it was fluid in the ears from birth. They did it 24h later and she passed.
my baby failed it 3 times at the hospital and once at his first pediatrician appointment, they had us go to an audiologist because they had better machines and then he passed
@Gabby thank you for this! He passed in left ear but not the right ear so being referred to audiology! Hoping it’s just fluid from birth! He was born vaginally though not a c section so just hoping for the best x
@Sophie he was born vaginally, we had it tested again today he passed left ear but failed right so will be referred to audiology hopefully it’s just fluid and nothing more x
Heyy! So if just like to give you some reassurance if you don’t get the news you want at audiology. My girl failed all the newborn tests and had to be referred to audiology. It took 3 reeeaallyy long appointments to get the tests done because they need to be asleep. Turns out she had mild hearing loss in the left ear and mild to moderate in the right. She’s now had hearing aids for a month since she was 6 and a half weeks and she is THRIVING. And there’s so much support available through charities that work with the NHS if your little one does have hearing loss. It’s honestly nothing to be worried about!!
Might not be what you want to hear but honestly deafness is not such a terrible thing. So much support out there and so many thrive! Myself included (profoundly deaf) has a PhD and doing fine in life. My daughter ‘failed’ her deaf test and is hearing but I wouldn’t have been worried if she was. I’m sure your LO will have the results you want but feel free to PM me if you want more info 😊
@Chloe aw she looks adorable! Thanks for commenting! It is reassuring to hear this! It’s just the right one for my baby that hasn’t passed so next will be the long test with audiology so will get more of an idea then! Have the aids helped your baby hear more and respond more etc? X
It’s been amazing. She was really alert before (GP thinks she was a little ahead in some areas because of compensating for her hearing) but now she’s so responsive and aware of her surroundings. Even though her hearing loss is quite mild, it was similar to those viral videos of children hearing for the first time when they were turned on. But she’s obsessed with music and has been even since before she got them!
Yeah but they said he might have stuff in them from the birth canal still
My daughter failed her hearing test in her right ear and passed in her left. We got referred to audiology and after more testing we discovered she had severe hearing loss in her right ear, she is almost profoundly deaf in the right ear but has full hearing in her left. She was given a hearing aid for the right just to help her identify sounds from that side but even with the hearing aid she can only hear sounds from 1m away in the right ear.. she is doing AMAZING! The only time you know she can’t hear you is when she turns her head onto her left side when she is napping and she sleeps for ages! I hope that your little one passes the test but if not, it’s not a bad thing and the support we have had is amazing! She is 6 months old now and has had her hearing aid since 8 weeks.
@Laura thank you for this! Mine has also failed right ear only so far and will be referred to audiology for more testing and will then find out more. I’m just grateful he has hearing in his left ear which is still reassuring at this stage. So hopefully it all goes well. X
Yes my daughter failed the first one but passed the second one a few days later, she was born in the water and they said that was pretty common
