Has anyone been late diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes?

The midwives had me do another Glucose test and it's confirmed I've got GD. I'm 37 weeks pregnant tomorrow so I'm very close to the end. I'm only 30, and low risk this entire pregnancy. I'm very very certain i want to deliver in the birth centre though. Does anyone know how this late diagnosis might impact me?

Sorry, nothing helpful to say but I’ve just been referred for another GTT on Monday, when I will also be 37 weeks. I’m really worried about this potential diagnosis being so late (only other GTT was 28 weeks and negative). I did have a long conversation with someone from the diabetic team at my hospital this morning, which made me feel a bit better so the only advice I have got is to talk to the experts, ask loads of questions and explain your feelings. It seems from what she said that diagnosis as late as this will mostly impact labour in terms of wanting to do hourly blood sugar tests on me and at least one test on baby when they are born.

Thanks for the info! I've got an appointment next week with them to discuss a plan. I'm mostly fixated on the fact I want to give birth at the birth centre and won't accept not doing so basically. My baby has been measuring well, head down and healthy so far so I'm feeling like I should still get the delivery I want.

Can I ask what caused them to do a follow up GTT? I had mine at 28 weeks and negative as well

For me it is because baby’s tummy is measuring big (99th percentile).

@Jane thanks, I wasn’t tested with my first and she was 9lb 14 oz and I’m higher risk this time so tested at 28 weeks (negative) with scans throughout - my identical twin had GD with her baby so I’m somewhat expecting a diagnosis later on but let’s see (currently 34 weeks)

I got diagnosed at 36 week, I have to control it with diet. As long as you’re blood sugars are in your range and no other risks then they’ll leave you alone to deliver naturally x

There’s risks associated with GD and birth for the mum and baby. I would speak with them and see what they say. Generally you can have a limited intervention birth in the hospital but at least then, there’s doctors etc on hand incase there’s any complications. Some complications include breathing problems for the baby, too much amniotic fluid which can cause issues, blood sugars dropping.

@Naomi 2 weeks ago at 34 weeks they just got me to do a random blood test. Then the results came back that my resting blood sugar was high so they called me and said they'd like to do another Glucose test at my next appointment

@Jane the thing that makes me feel a bit better and hopefully doesn't change my birth plans much is that baby has been measuring average. So hoping it'll be OK that even with GD, I can still go natural at the birth centre...

@Pegeen got it! And did they give you something to keep testing your blood is fine?

Yes, they give you one of them glucose monitors, test strips and something to prick your finger with! You can messaged me if you like and I can tell you some of the better carbs etc to eat?
