FORMULA FEEDING

How much / frequent was your baby feeding at 4-5 weeks old? My boy was born 8lb 8oz and is 4w 3d old He is on liquid formula for numerous reasons, which is so expensive and we’re looking to reduce the wastage… he feeds every 2-3 hours, we offer 100ml (3.33oz) taking around 70(2.33oz) - 100ml sometimes i feel he may take more as the bottle is cleared right out, other times he just gets sleepy and is content after 2/2.5oz and goes to sleep… with liquid formula this is difficult because that wastage massively adds up. I don’t want people to say “move him to powder, change temp etc” we have tried it all and numerous midwife’s have said to keep him on what he is on for multiple reasons so swapping isn’t an option, i just want to know if i increase his bottles to 120ml (4oz) it’s likely he will start to take more and perhaps go every 3-4 hours instead so there will be less wastage as he is slightly hungrier due to the frequency changing? i just feel like i don’t want to over or under feed him and it is really making me anxious!

My baby is 5W 2d old and has anywhere between 3-5oz He was born at 6lb 1oz and now weighs roughly 8lb 8oz If he’s still looking I would make him more , I know wasting formula is a pain as it’s so expensive, but I would rather waste knowing he’s had enough

Hi, my baby is also 4w 3d old and takes between 4-5oz (between 120-150ml) every 3-4 hours. She was born 8lb 6oz. I give her more than she will drink as she will often take 130ml and that 10ml seems to content her for longer but sometimes she’ll only take 120ml just depends

Ours is taking 2-3oz every feed. On the odd occasion 4 but rare. Overnight she only has 1oz each feed. She’s putting on weight still so I’m not too fussed

Unfortunately it’s just one of those things.. babies won’t be consistent until they’re older and even then, they won’t always finish bottles. If baby is looking for more, more often then not, then I would increase and see how they get on. With regards to the liquid/powder, I’m assuming that you mean the pre-made formula which is going to work out super expensive in the long run. The powder is just the same.. just not ready made. Assuming that you’re using one of the big brands then it’s not actually switching them over as it’s same formula. Not telling you to do that but personally I don’t see a reason to stay on that when it’s the same 😊

@Samantha as i said, i’ve been told by midwife, health visitors and a doctor to not change him off the pre-made liquid. we did try the same milk in powder but hes not able to digest due to consistency, caused him to become lethargic as he refused to drink it so became extremely tired and the only milk he will take (and he does a good job of it!) is the liquid so i’ve been advised to stay on it for longer … i know it’s expensive but if it’s the only way he is going to feed and gain weight i dont really have much choice ☹️ rather pay out then him be suffering x

I feed my baby both ready made formula and powder (Aptamil) - just depends on circumstances, at night when he starts screaming I give him the ready made formula rather than the powder as I don’t have the time/ energy to prep it so for me it’s convinience. During the day he has powder. My son is 4 weeks and 4 days and he eats a lot! He weighed 8lbs 7 oz when born and he eats between 2-3 hours. Amounts vary on how hungry he is but anything from 100-160 ml per feed which is sometimes fast and sometimes takes time and we take breaks.
