Spit up

My 6 week old spits up so much. I know spit up is very common in newborns but I feel like his spitting up is way more than normal. He spits up multiple times, larger amounts, after every single bottle. I plan to speak to his pediatrician at his next appt in two weeks about possible acid reflux or lactose intolerance. Anyone else experiencing this or have with any of your past babies? He’s formula fed and on Enfamil Gentlease. Is there another formula any of you have tried that’s decreased spit up?

My little one is doing the same! He's 7 weeks and he's taking medicine prescribed to him for his acid reflux but I don't think it helps. He's also on the same formula as your LO, the Enfamil gentlease. Do you feed your little one upright and have him in an upright position for a bit after feedings?

@Daisy yes! I feed him upright , burp multiple times and keep him propped up after and it still happens. Sometimes it happens immediately after feeding and other times it may be 30min-hr. Usually it’s multiple times of spitting up. He also eats large amounts and I think sometimes may be overeating. My pediatrician did say to try smaller feedings more often but sometimes he’s still hungry so it doesn’t always work that way.

@Shelby how much is he eating? My little ones paediatricians said the same thing and recommended 3 ounces otherwise he's overeating. Have you tried offering a pacifier instead when he finishes his bottle?

My baby does this too and her pediatrician says as long as she doesn’t appear uncomfortable, like arching her back or showing any clear signs of discomfort or pain, then it is normal and due to a weak muscle in her esophagus that works like a flap to keep things down that strengthens over time

@Daisy he eats 4oz every feed, sometimes will still cry another oz or two but I’ve read recently that it can take up to 30 min for them to register the food they just ate to feel full so I try and offer the paci instead. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t.

@Steph our pedi said the exact same thing. But sometimes the spit up is so forceful or comes out thru his nose too and he can’t breathe for a few seconds.

My baby recently experience increased spit up as well and my doula and I spoke about the possibility of over feeding him. Theres apparently an equation that pediatricians use that factors baby’s weight and age to help determine how much to feed your baby. I was feeding my 7 week old 110 ml each time and that was apparently too much. Once I changed it to 100 ml per feeding, his spot up was significantly less and he actually slept longer.

My baby has the same problem. He has acid reflux medication, but that’s only to help with the pain, and it might help keep some of it in his stomach. His pediatrician is also having him get an abdominal ultrasound to rule anything else out

@Ann do you know what equation is used? He’s 6 weeks and about 11lbs

My daughter was spitting up and I switched her to Enfamil AR. Stopped ever since 😊

Could be he is getting air from the bottle? If you don’t already, maybe a vented bottle like Dr Browns could help. Also, side lying feeding could help. We have a breastfed kiddo who is 9 wks now and we are constantly dealing with spit up. I believe he falls into the “happy spitter” category. I have to keep him upright for at least 15 minutes after a feed (and not reclined, like upright on my shoulder) to sometimes prevent spit up. I would consider talking to a lactation consultant in addition to the pediatrician. Their whole job is infant feeding!

@Brooklyn I feed him on his side and we use the Dr Browns anti colic bottles. Thank you for the recommendations though! I also think he may just be a happy spitter but an considering changing formula. I have heard of the AR Enfamil being good for spit up but he’s also been constipated and on lactulose so am nervous to switch him to a rice formula.

@Shelby my daughter did not do well with cows milk based formulas and we had great success with the Kendamil goat milk formula if you want to try a different milk base.

@Brooklyn Thank you I’ve heard good things about that one , apparently there is a shortage for Kendamil goat formula at the moment.
