Wait for GP or a&e?

Hi ladies, I need advice as my partner and parents don’t have a clue. Nursery told me last week my son had cut his finger at some point in the day, they don’t know how, I’ve been cleaning it with salt water and a dab of tcp morning and night but yesterday he got sent home from nursery with a temperature and woke up with one today (38.3) and the little cut has a pink ring around it now though the skin has covered the wound. I know it could be totally unrelated but i’ve been worried about it as it is a bit yellowy and as I say now has that pinker tone around it. I called 111 and they said either go to an urgent treatment center or the gp will call at 11 and if they want to see him they’ll ask him to come in. Only thing is i’m supposed to be dropping him at my MILs at 11 as I have my 31 week growth scan at 11:40. I could pick him up and bring him straight after of course, I’m just not sure what to do, I’m a very anxious mum and just want someone to tell me what to do 😞

@Elena hey babe, do you think we’ll be okay to wait until then? X

Call your own gp this morning when they open

Can't your partner take the baby to the GP? You could also rearrange your scan appointment and go to A&E or the GP. If none is an option, I would drop baby at MIL, go to your scan and then to A&E.

I think GP is a better option

@Elena to be fair that’s always been the case with anything like this before they ask for pictures and send something to the pharmacy, i’m just worried about the random temperature xx

A clean warm rag and some neosporin

@𝔾𝕚𝕤𝕖𝕝𝕝𝕖 he’s at work and left to pick him up from nursery when they called about the temperature yesterday, I definitely will be getting him seen it’s just if it can wait till after 11 or not, I can’t reschedule my scan they always have limited appointments

@Lor staff understands this happens, you could ask to reschedule and see what they say. How far is A&E from your scan appointment? You could easily get to A&E after 1pm if you take him to MIL. I think it can wait, but not ideal. Can MIL come with you and your son to your scan appointment? You could all drive toegther to A&E afterwards and that saves time. Otherwise you can drive now to A&E hoping to get seen before 10.30... which is possible if they are not too busy. I don't know how easy it is to get an appointment with your GP, but due to the fever they usually wnat to get them checked so I would go straight to A&E if GP is a hassle.

Why can’t you ring his gp now and make an appointment? Or take him to the pharmacy they should be able to give him antibiotics

I don’t think it needs A&E. I would call your gp now or go and visit a pharmacy to see what they advise

If you go to A&E you may be waiting there till much later than 11 anyway. I'd wait for the GP in the first instance.

It’s definitely a GP or pharmacy matter rather than A&E. Looks like a normal infection from a cut, just keep it clean and dry and get some cream from the pharmacy or doctor. Calpol for his fever, it might even be unrelated to the cut considering it’s still rubbish weather and he’s in nursery xx

Hi ladies, I panicked and took him to a&e at 8:30 this morning, funnily enough it turns out it’s not infected at all apparently the yellowy scab is a normal part of healing (I asked for a consultant to confirm as I’m that parent) BUT he has a nasty virus, his temp was 38.9 and heart rate 170 so we had to stay in until both came down which they did after a double dose of both nurofen and calpol, been told to give him squash (apparently they drink more when it tastes nice and fluids are most important for the next few days) and to take calpol every 4 hours and if it doesn’t bring the temperature down then nurofen an hour later but only 3 nurofens a day. So it is a bit of a strange one where the finger was fine but he wasn’t regardless, luckily the finger is fine and it got me to a&e for what he needed! I managed to move my scan to 3:40 this afternoon so he’s now happily eating pancakes at his grandma’s! Xx

I’m glad you were able to get him checked and hope he recovers soon ❤️in future for minor injuries please make an appointment with the GP, it’ll save you time. A&E is for major/life threatening injuries/illnesses.

@Sophie I did make an appointment with the gp it wasn’t just because of the cut I was concerned but because of his fever and how he just wasn’t himself, not eating etc, but gp was only offering a telephone consultation later that morning they wouldn’t offer anything else and then if I hadn’t have gone to a&e who knows what would have happened as like I said they kept him in all day because his heart rate was through the roof and his temperature kept spiking so it’s just as well I did really!
