Feeding problems, silent reflux/cmpa??

Long post alert… Looking for some advice.. my LO is 7 weeks old and we’ve had issues with her feeding since birth. Back story… When she was born I tried breastfeeding but due to latching issues we topped up with formula (cow & gate as that’s what they had in hospital and I was in for 5 days due to an infection). She was combi fed for 10/12 days she is now fully formula fed and is on Aldis Mamia. She has always been terrible for getting wind out, constantly trying every different position going/bike legs etc. Her trapped wind can be so bad she is screaming and looks like she’s in visible pain. She also only poos every other day so don’t know if she’s constipated as well as having trapped wind. We have tried infacol which has been hit and miss and have just started to use gripe water. I’ve always thought she has silent reflux as she always gets hiccups after a feed no matter how long she’s sat upright for (she’s also fed upright) she coughs during feeding, sounds congested, wheezy and sneezing loads with a lot of snot. She also has had a few episodes where she has brought back up her feed and it’s come up through her nose as well as mouth. And when drinking she also spits the milk out of the side of her mouth so don’t feel like she’s getting a full feed. Tonight has been hard, she’s in so much pain, screaming inconsolably and only drinking 2oz at a time. I’m really at a loss of what I can do or what is exactly wrong with her. HV just says to keep trying different colic stuff.. we’ve got our mum and baby check Friday so hoping the doctor listens and helps. Has anyone had anything similar and had any answers?

This sounds exactly like my baby. We are just over 7 weeks old. Had the exact same symptoms, with the additional rash on face, we went to the doctors last Thursday and was diagnosed with cows milk protein allergy. I have heard it’s extremely difficult to get the diagnosis but we were lucky and were diagnosed immediately as my baby had all of the symptoms of CMPA. We were prescribed a formula without cows milk in and I have cut it from my diet too (she is combi fed currently). We even had the issues of latch in the hospital and ended up giving a bottle so the breast milk she gets is expressed and given in the bottle. I would advise to book an appt with the GP specifically for the symptoms you mentioned and advise that you have tried anti colic medication but nothing is changing. I’m no medical professional so I don’t know but it does sound very similar to my little one. We have been on the prescribed formula for one week tomorrow and I can already see a massive improvement x

This sounds exactly like my 6 week old! We are currently on formula for cmpa but also trialling gaviscon for reflux too xx

@Becky she also has a slight rash on her face as well but not sure if it’s just baby acne or a possible symptom of cmpa…another random symptom that I forget about that could be something and nothing is her farts are horrendous smelling like really eggy and worse than some adult farts I’ve smelt in my time😂 curious if your little one experienced that either? Will see what they say at my appointment on Friday but if not I’ll be calling back to try and push for help on it x

Yeah I put the rash down to being baby acne too however now her skin has cleared a lot since being milk free, I will say it’s not gone completely but there’s a massive improvement. The farts were smelly too! And she’d be constipated and in pain then when she did poo it was horrendous like runny and would be all up her back and overflowing out of her nappy (sorry for the detail 🙈). If the GP are being slow to help, in the interim period I’m pretty sure you can actually buy formula that doesn’t have cows milk in it. I’m sure the aptamil pepti can be bought from Amazon and is for cows milk allergy. It could be worth trialling that to see if you notice any improvements if the dr says it’s okay to do so. I hope you get the answers and the doctor listens to you! Feel free to message me if you have any questions or just wanna talk about it. I know how stressful it can be when your baby is upset and you feel like there’s nothing you can do to help. It really is awful and so tiring x

@Becky I think she gets constipated as well but yeah when she goes it’s not so much up her back but it’s very much all over her front, and then (TMI) when I wipe her bum she just keeps going and sometimes it’s violent and shoots out😂 That’s helpful to know! May have to give it ago..just hoping my GP listens. Thank you, really appreciate it! X

Oh god yeah, I know that! I always have a new nappy at the ready for changes, I have got caught out one too many times there! 🤣 Ahh no problem at all, I’ve got my fingers crossed for you and good luck x

It sounds like she is taking in a lot of air while feeding which could be part of the root cause for wind & reflux. Maybe you could try different bottles or a different test to make sure when feeding the seal is in place and then every few minutes stop the feed and burp/wind and then continue it. Could help… and then would also have the formula reviewed with a GP and see if any allergy/other options,

I’d have an oral assessment done, could potentially be a tongue tie ?

@Georgia hi! Our 5 wk old has these symptoms! Horrendous smelling farts/poos, very eggy, green runny poos and LOTS of vomit. We are currently investigating CMPA with the HV and GP. I’ve cut dairy from my diet (EBF) to see if its that, but will likely cut all other possible allergens too if cutting dairy doesn’t work. The drs are really funny and keep pushing reflux on us and will brush off an allergy (i had to keep pushing for them to take me seriously ref an allergy). I will also be asking for CMPA formula as a back up incase me cutting out foods becomes too hard or we dont manage to find the culprit quickly. (I cant bare seeing him in pain much longer). Ps. Reflux can be a symptom of CMPA i believe, so can be both (we think we have the same).

Also, not sure if anyone else’s baby does this but ours makes these sounds a lot now and usually when he’s waiting to vomit. Maybe a CMPA thing? Or it could be learning to coo/ahh?

Came here to say CMPA too! So similar with our first, I hope you get some support (prescription formula!) soon but it can be a bit of a battle xx

Hi, my little one is exactly the same! I’ve been brushed off by my GP this morning and HV about cmpa symptoms. I’m not 100% convinced it’s a protein allergy or potentially a feeding issue, he had his tongue tie cut but also has a lip tie. My little boy is 4 weeks and hasn’t pooed without lactulose and even on the lower dose of that he hasn’t had consistent poos. I spoke to a holistic sleep coach who advised to get the GP to prescribe hydrolysed milk but he was reluctant and advised to wait two weeks due to not wanting to change things and then advised I try kendamil comfort milk 🙄 so I’m going to try that as it’s less lactulose, see if there’s a difference and if not the holistic sleep coach advised to speak to her again and she’ll assess his feeding/latch on the bottle and offer advice and support. It’s such a minefield and I left feeling very frustrated! Hope you get somewhere 😊 x
