Gestational diabetes

I'm currently on day 3 of 7 day monitoring for gestational diabetes because when we tried the glucose tolerance test I was sick 15 minutes after the drink (morning sickness and no food to help with it dont really mix well) so they didn't want to put me through that again. I was told I was gett8ng a plasma blood test to check for it then when I went for an appointment they said they hadn't recieved my blood sample and put me down for the 7 day monitoring. The thing is, my blood sugars are always showing high when I wake up in thw morning before I have eaten anything and I have no idea why. When I look up healthy blood sugar readings online it says I'm still in range for someone without diabetes though. My partner is type 1 diabetic and doesn't understand it either. It's kind of making me scared to eat snacks and stuff between meals incase my blood sugar spikes on the next reading. With still having the morning sickness I was told to eat little and often rather than set meals but with the testing I have to test when I wake up before eating then an hour after every meal (breakfast lunch and dinner) how am I meant to do this properly when I'm not actually having set meals because I was advised not to 🤨 It's all pretty confusing to me

I got diagnosed with GD two months back, and the doctors have been so unhelpful and unsupportive with it. I regret going through a public hospital it's so bad. I've had no appetite, I'm forcing myself to eat for the baby and keep being lectured to not gain weight and to exercise more, even though I've lost 6 kilos (currently 22 weeks). At this stage my blood results are all normal but I actually don't know what results will require me to be on insulin. It's such a nightmare. Baby is currently normal size and healthy though which is good

What are your morning readings? I had GD so might be able to help. The fasting sugars are hard to control

@Katerina they are so unhelpful aren't they. I've been doing my own fmresearch into it because pf how little information they have given me. I always seem to wake up at around 3 in the morning and I told my midwife this at my appointment on Friday and she told me to have a biscuit because that is when your blood sugars tend to drop into he night which is why it's common for pregnant people to wake up between 3 and 4. But I can't do this if the morning reading is meant to be a fasting reading. My baby is currently measuring big according to the hospital but at my 4d scan yesterday the lady said she was measuring on target for her gestational age. Some of her is even measuring smaller so again, so confusing. I never had to deal with any of this with my son except having low papp a so had to take aspirin throughout

I had GD with second baby and it's back again with the third. They did an early test so I've been doing sugar readings since 10 weeks (currently 16 weeks) and my morning readings are always the high readings too and about the same level as yours. They might offer you Metformin to try and bring them down. I'm on it at the moment but it isn't really working yet so definitely riding the GD wave too. Feel free to drop me a message if you ever want a rant / ramble about it. It definitely helps having people around who are going through the same 🥰

@Amy Friday was 5.3, yesterday was 5.5 and today is 5.4 so they are all pretty similar. Just don't understand why they are showing up in the red zone on the app when the normal blood sugar readings online say they are fine.

@Amy my fasting readings are mid 4s

You don’t need to check your blood after every snack. I would say if you’re not eating set meals like lunch and dinner. Check 1 hr after your biggest “snack” I guess? Readings should not be higher than 140. If you’re going to check it after 2 hours it should not be more than 120. Start your timer the moment you take your first bite. Eat more protein snacks rather than sugary snacks, i would say limit carb intake, stick to healthier alternatives. I am 30 weeks pregnant and was diagnosed with GD as well so I check my sugar before I have my first meal (fasting), after breakfast, and lunch, and after dinner. I do not check after every snack I just make sure to eat healthy snacks more (cheese sticks, apple w/ peanut butte, plain yogurt with some fruit) I know it’s not easy and can seem confusing but if you can ask them for guidance or I’m free to help :)

@Melissa that's part of the problem though because the midwife has told me to eat little and often rather than set meals because of the sickness so I don't know when to actually do it. Hospital/doctors aren't being any help at all unfortunately

You should eat as often as possible when you can. Is she telling you this because you have been throwing up or feeling sick? Or why is she giving you that advice

@Melissa because I've actually been being sick but when I'm not being sick I feel so nauseous. I'm on sickness tablets but they aren't helping at all. I've tried a few different types now but nothing seems to work

Truthfully I didn’t read the comments so I apologize if it’s been said. I had GD and my morning counts were high. They told me to: - go for a walk after dinner - eat a snack before bed The longer you go without eating (fasting over night) can cause your hormones to surge which leads to a high reading. So I tried those two and my counts were still elevated in the morning. I ended up having to take a slow release insulin injection before bed and slowly titrate my dose up as the hormones increased over the pregnancy. In the last few weeks I was able to get it under control. But then my counts after dinner went up near the end. So I was on a different fast acting insulin injection for supper haha. It’s all about how the body and the placenta get along and how your hormones fluctuate. I was worried after having my baby that I would continue to have diabetes but I took the glucose test again and everything was fine. It’s rubbish to test yourself 4 times a day, watch what you

Eat and if you need meds/injections… but it’s only temporary. And your baby will be happy and healthy once they arrive. Although they might be big haha. 😂 (I was induced early - ended in c-section due to size and being breech- and my guy was 9 lbs 3oz at 38 weeks).

I've had gestational diabetes all 3 pregnancies my last I ended up on slow release insulin overnight towards the end of my pregnancy. Your fasting levels are showing up in the red zone on the app because fasting levels are meant to be 5 or below, have a snack before bed cheese and crackers are the recommended snack (carb and protein) you can still have snacks between meals just try and eat low GI foods stay away from white bread,pasta and rice etc. Try have a bit of protein each time you eat. I had to be induced with my last bub as his abdomen was measuring in the 99th percentile but be was 3.3kgs (7pound 4oz) the midwives were actually a bit confused as to why I was being induced at 38 weeks for such a little bub 😅

I have GD and have to keep my fasting level below 5.3. What are your readings after dinner the night before? Could be your evening meal is too high carb or fat. Things like poor sleep and dehydration will also cause high blood sugar

@Sarah my evening readings are in the green zone so absolutely fine. The only ones in the red is the fasting one in the morning.

@Shanade I will try rhe cheese and crackers tonight and see if it makes a difference. Would you suggest any particular time to have it?

@Alana she's being delivered via csection =) hopefully I dint need to take injections or medication because I've no idea how it will react with my epilepsy meds. I know some medication can effect it

If you don’t eat food for a long period of time, your body releases glucose into your bloodstream and your blood sugar spikes. That, coupled with some lovely hormone ups and downs at nighttime are the reason for your raised blood sugar in the morning.
