Am I over feeding my little boy?

I EBF my little boy (he's 4 weeks old today) Occasionally he just eats and then is sick after the feed and is then hungry again. Last night he was eating on and off for 10-15mins in an hour/1.5hrs and would be sick afterwards. He doesn't burp very often no matter how hard and long I try for. Am I doing something wrong? Or is there something I can do to help him? FTM often over thinking everything 🙈 x

you can’t overfeed a breastfed baby although it really feels like it when they are doing that! Four weeks is a typical cluster feeding time where they want to constantly feed to secure your milk supply. It can be really tough time, my baby would do that for up to four hours at night during weeks 4-6 and it’s really tough! You’re not doing anything wrong, your supply will regulate and he will become better at knowing how much he needs to take. I found if it was really bad and he was being sick loads that my partner taking him to different room and rocking him/calming him would work for a little bit to give my nipples a break and he would settle if he couldn’t smell me! It also could be reflux and that’s really common too, my baby also had this and there are medicines to help it if it is really bad and they are sicking up loads

As Louisa said, you can’t overfeed a breastfed baby!!! It could be comfort, cluster feeding or just hungry x

@Louisa thank you, I appreciate this information and heads up thatb itll xontinue for a few more weeks. My partner did take him downstairs for a bit before work so I could get some rest. By the sounds of it I might have utilise this more often x

@Ryan thanks x

just read your bio my baby is also baby Jones🥰 have you tried googling different burping techniques? i had a midwife visit today and she showed me different ways to burp her, she also said if they fart instead of burp that that counts aswell! just a wee heads up cause i didn’t know this, also try keep him upright for a while after feeds, my baby was sick a lot in hospital after feeds and this helped x

@Kirsty aww 💕 Yeah we've tried them all and keeping him upright doesn't always work. I even tried feeding him in upright positions but doesn't really help either. Sometimes he goes a while without farting too, though when my partner gets home from work and holds him he farts and poops loads 🙈🤣 He seemed to be struggling with trapped wind in general 2 weeks ago so the health visitor advised using infacol but that made him really sick after every feed and didn't seem to make a difference so we stopped it. The health visitor is coming later so I'm going to ask for mire advise/help then too x

its most likely a cluster feeding phase it happens with EBF and formula babies alike! It should go away within a week or two, but you can’t really overfeed a ebf baby.

@Kathy thank you x

Is he bottlefed from pumped milk? Cuz that would be the only way he'd get too much too fast. Otherwise look into things like reflux if he vomits after eating often

@Jade no only boob but I did wonder about reflux so will mention it to the health visitor, thanks x

My boy was the same & had acid reflux

You are doing great Mama! Don’t worry too much as you can’t over feed a breastfed baby. There are growth spurts that happen in the first 6-8 weeks so they feed more often for sure. Is he getting sick or is it just spit up? This is pretty normal as the flow of your milk is still adjusting to what baby needs, sometimes it can be too much and they spit up quite a bit.

@Samantha-Jo thank you. It's either milky liquid or thickish white clumpy liquid like curdled milk. It comes up on its own when led down or after a burp/hiccups so I'm guessing spit up but I've always called it baby sick since a child sorry as I didn't know the difference x

@Shannon no problem! My baby is doing that too! Granted he is only 5 days old but just had the clumpy “curdled” milk looking spit up and my midwife was here she said it’s totally normal, nothing to worry about. Also only happens when he is really worked up or laid down. If it’s sick it will be quite a bit and almost look like vomit where it comes out fast and they can be pretty upset after as well like it hurt. Spit up doesn’t bother them as much, it will happen and then they carry on like northing happened.

Will add that my midwife said it’s just half digested milk which is why it looks curdled. But it’s not a bad thing!

@Samantha-Jo ahh i had no idea but makes sense. Occasionally it's like he can't get it up and he cries a bit or you can see his mouth and tongue moving to try and get it up. Once or twice he's made sounds like it's stuck in his throat so I've made sure to sit him up straight away and try to burp him again to get it out. I'd say it's definitely spit up from your description and appreciate your comments x

@Shannon definitely sounds like spit up to me! Sounds like you are doing all the right things, once he is able to burp a little more independently and with a little more ease (around 4-6 months old) it won’t be as alarming. Good job Mama ❤️

@Samantha-Jo thanks so much 💕
