We're can count to 20 and recognise most of those numbers. He can now identify most of the letters in the alphabet and knows the first letter of his name and some other names but can't read words yet although tries to guess what some words are with context clues. We're working on writing letters, numbers, and drawing shapes but he doesn't like doing things like that. I think it's a bit young to be reading yet as I'm sure I read that the expectation when they start school is that they can identify their name written down. Doesn't hurt to encourage those skills though. Remember every child learns and develops at different speeds.
I’ve been warned not to teach my child to much before school as they all get taught different to how we think they should be taught to learn which causes issues when they go to school. My MIL keeps her 2 days and would be very gd at learning her letters and numbers she can count to 20 and recognises letters and associates them with animals or people
I would suggest introducing recognising numbers, 1-10 is expected for school but tbh lots of children can go upto 20, practising counting so they understand the quantity and using language like more, few, less etc. I would do it through every day tasks rather than sitting down activities. Like counting out cutlery when setting the table. Problem solving through puzzles and construction can help develop maths understanding as well as attention skill. Introduce topic info books and role model how fun learning about the world is. Introduce phonic sounds first instead of alphabet - through every day life and have fun with it. (Make sure you know the phonic sounds!) I.e draw attention the title of the book and sound out the first letter. In terms of prepping for school I would focus on them having good communication - like being able to ask for help, enjoying learning, persevering when things get tough, co-regulating emotions, social skills - role modelling how to make friends etc
@Rachel amazing advice. Thank you. Are you a teacher?
We can just about count to 7ish sometimes 10. I don’t think they can read but they know some books due to repetition. I’m trying to teach letters atm
