Sup/tax

I will be starting my mat leave 21/04 so in the new tax year. Does anyone know if we will be able to not get taxed on our SMP/if we can request this? I did try ask my work the other month but they just said we don’t know your tax code yet… my pay isn’t changing salary wise & my work are pretty useless with pay in general (been paid wrong on multiple occasions) so they haven’t really given me much to go on 🤣🤣 Just trying to think of ways to save a bit more money! I’ve already paused my pension for when I go on Mat.

I was taxed as normal on Mat leave (on my enhanced pay) the I just got a big rebate the following April. I have no idea if that’s the normal process!

Unfortunately not, you will still be eligible to be taxed on SMP. I never did get taxed as I earned £673 a month xx

I know we can get taxed on it, I just mean as it’s the new tax year we have our tax free allowance of £12k x

I started my mat pay at the start of the year as well x

The new tax year starts in April, not at the start of the year xx

Oh this is a good point, I’m sure HMRC have already guessed your next years earnings by now tho so have already giving you a tax code for this year? If you get what I mean, if you have the HMRC app you can talk to them on online chat which is pretty quick and ask them on that?

Yes that is what I meant. The new tax year x

I went on mat leave at the start of the financial year with my first and I called and got my tax code changed so I wouldn’t get taxed as wouldn’t be earning above the threshold. I will do the same as this year as go on leave 16th April
