Tongue ties & nhs

Hello mamas. I’m gonna try and make this short because I’m desperate and I need help and opinions and advice as quick as possible ( any rude commentary please keep it to yourself ) 5 month old babyboy has tongue tie. I’m being bounced between gp and health visitors because they refuse to release it because they said it’s not needed. His older brother had a tongue tie took me 9 months for them to finally say yes and get it done. Is there any other way to do this ?

Go privately x

Definitely go private! NHS are rubbish with tongue tie!

Nhs ruined my breastfeeding journey they at first refused to acknowledge that my baby was toungue tied then when they did they said it wasn’t bad enough even tho my baby wasn’t putting on weight but I was saving money and got it done privately in the end however my baby was already on pumped bottles by this time as this was the only way he was gaining weight I’d say get it done as soon as you can but the nhs is terrible x

How do I go private ? What’s the process please ?

Look/contact The Tongue Tie Clinic they are fantastic. They run donation clinic’s too at a lower cost but they know their stuff and provide great before and after care!

@Jazmin is there one in London ? Hackney area

Try through Infant Feeding Team. They were the only ones who took us seriously about our boy's tongue tie and after assessing him she referred him to Maxillofacial Surgery. They ultimately decided it didn't need cut and we agreed and were happy with that decision but we wouldn't have been able to make that decision without the assessment and referral through Infant Feeding Team.

@Maria sorry I meant the Tongue Tie Centre - link here: https://www.thetonguetiecentre.org Based in Clapham

@Jazmin thank you

@Rebecca they are trying to put me through to them but I know they will say he won’t need one because he eats and he gains weight as he should but come on my little boy can’t even stick his tongue out and when he tries it folds underneath. He’s not even blabbing My gut tells me to remove it.

@Maria tongue tie affects more than just being able to stick their tongue out. It’s the entire fascia throughout the whole body which is restricted if there is a tongue tie. It causes sleeping issues due to causing a high palate, eating, drinking, chewing, breathing issues. I would 1000000% get an assessment done by someone qualified in tongue tie for their professional opinion

Happy dental in chelsea were amazing with mine that had to have it done twice because the first with midwives reattached found using the ATP website had no follow up care and did it on mu dining room table (wouldnt recommend). Dr Suraj is a dentist paedatric oral surgeon (not sure how much for qualified you can get) doesnt just do the release and leave you. Helps you throughtout the whole journey

@Jazmin I am aware. He has reflux because of his tongue tie even though he’s on special milk to help with the reflux. There’s a lot more issues I’m noticing now that his gotten older

Private. NHS cut off is 12 weeks and 4 days. I've just been through this and she got it done on the NHS, 3 days before she hit cut off because I made an absolute fuss and made a complaint to the health board. They won't see you now at 5 months. If you Google tongue tie there's a database that will provide you with details of all private tongue tie specialists in the UK. You can usually be seen pretty quickly.

We took our daughter to a pediatric dentist who does it at his office

@Maria hopefully if they get you through to Maxillofacial Surgical Team they can do a full assessment and make sure they’ve considered everything

We went private even though we were told it wasn’t necessary. We chose peace of mind! X

Get it done privately … sadly, they seem very reluctant to do on the NHS

Lactation consultant sorted my boys referral asap and she even sent it to a hospital that could get him in sooner but was a bit further away so I wasn’t waiting ages x

Private 100% nhs are useless with diagnosing tongue tie & treating it

@Jazmin there are closing early April

I had it done by the NHS but it grew back and I am doing it privately now. Not that I want to scare you about paying twice

I had my daughter's done private last year as no NHS service. The company was called infantts. They even did some feeding advice with me. Cost £200 but was so worth it for my little girl to feed better and be more comfortable with feeding. Hope you get sorted soon xx
