38+4

Hi Ladies, I could use a sounding board... I got diagnosed late around 36 weeks after they did a random blood test at 35 weeks and found higher resting rate sugar levels. Likely because I had a meal or something before coming to the hospital. I just got the blood test kit last week and been measuring it 2hrs after meals and every morning after waking. My resting rate is always good and out of 7 days, I only had 3 meals (1 lunch and 2 dinners) where my levels went over 6.4. The highest was 7.2 I think. My due date is literally next Saturday and I have every intention of giving birth at the birth centre. The doctor today wanted to put me on insulin and I declined. The OB last week wanted to induce me at 39 weeks. I declined. She then asked if I was open for a membrane sweep at 39+4 and I said maybe. I'm basically wanting to go to my due date next Saturday (April 5th), and then see about maybe doing a membrane sweep at 40+2 or 3. Just trying to go as natural as possible as it's my first baby and I don't want to rush her to come any sooner than she is ready. Would love to go into spontaneous labor. The research shows that if I don't have any other risks, and I'm managing my blood sugar and baby isn't measuring too big. Then I should be good to keep going down my natural path. Also inductions are linked to more interventions and longer labor and more painful contractions. All of which I'm trying to avoid. My question is: Do you think I'm doing the safe thing waiting till my due date and then maybe doing a membrane sweep over an induction? As I still want to deliver in the birth centre. No other risk factors btw. I have good blood pressure and I'm 30. First baby. Baby's movements are good and baby has a good heart beat.

Yeah I’m not sure why they are pushing you if your blood sugars are within target and baby isn’t big? I am only 30+6, odd raised blood sugar but no pattern (mostly within target) and baby is measuring fine, so I’m not on any medication and they’ve said that if it stays this way everything can happen naturally?

Literally just had this discussion with my consultant yesterday. They can only offer, it’s up to you what you feel is best for you and your baby. NICE guidelines say that for GD that is well controlled (which sounds like yours is!) there’s no need to induce before 40+6. Consultant yesterday wanted to book me in for an induction next week at 39 weeks, I said no. My diabetic midwife (the same one I speak with every couple of weeks to check in and who actually knows my numbers/me) says I don’t need to make a decision on induction til the 40+6 and even then would probably be fine to continue if I wanted to - given everything is fine with baby and me. In the end, agreed to extra checks with consultant at 40 weeks to make sure bubs is still good (basically just Doppler and feeling my tummy for position etc) and will go for another check if I decide against induction at 40+6. All to say - it’s completely up to you.

I did the same & am this pregnancy too. If your numbers are under control there’s no need for their intervention & the additional risks are so so low there’s no need.
