Career mindset

What is everyone's ideal work environment? Coming up to a career decision and wondering how everyone else feels towards work. I'm in my early 30s if that makes a difference. 1) same job for a long time where you know exactly what you're doing, it's not stressful, you know and like the team etc. 2) a different job every 3 years or so, where you are challenged, learn new things, meet new people, progress your career. Help! What is everyone's else's mindset towards work?

I feel in the same job you can still progress. Aim for the promotion/next step up. Or stay in the field/area and progress. Then get best of both worlds. Know the basics, know you like it but still learn new things and get challenged as you progress. Or if you don’t want to can stay in the same area until you do feel ready. Maybe I’m biased though as in healthcare so tends to be the same job but different areas and progress haha 😂

I work in education so my goal is a solid home base with the opportunity to collaborate with different organizations, schools, researchers etc

The most important thing to me with a job is flexibility. If I have to take my kids to the doctor in the middle of the day then it is fine and I make up the work later.

Working in financial services, I would personally feel like I’d be limiting myself to keep in the same role for a really long time. Changing jobs every 3-4 years (although I stayed somewhere for 7 years when I was able to move up in that role) has meant that I have been able to build out my experiences, gain seniority and negotiate a good salary. But I have done all of this before having any children, and now I’m in my late 30s having my first child, my priorities may shift and I may stay somewhere longer because of the flexibility and security that my employer provides. Each time I’ve changed jobs, it’s in the moment when I have the offer that I’ve weighed up going vs staying, and let my instinct guide me. I have turned down an offer to stay where I was (and got a great opportunity to travel from it!) which worked out that time, but otherwise have always gone and not regretted it!
