What worked for us was a few days spent at home and him being naked (expect there to be many accidents), then we did pull ups for a little while with a sticker reward chart, then gradually moved to underwear. We have a car potty which has helped with going out during the day. He now does underwear all day (minus nap time). He still wears a pull up when he sleeps (nap and bedtime), but we noticed it is getting less and less full as time goes on. It definitely has been a long process for us. I don't know how some people potty train so fast!
Anyway, this is what has been working for us. We just follow his cues and now like I said he is full underwear during the day and even tells us or just goes by himself. Investing in a potty seat that has a step for him to climb up to the toilet works great for us too.
Also they just need to be ready. My kid is weird. We are 95% of the time pooping in the potty. 45% peeing. We went from. 0 to 45 from one day to the next. We didn't do anything different. It just changed for her.
