Winding after feeds

Hi, should a baby burp after every feed? I find I cannot get my baby to burp after every feed and frightened when I put him down back to sleep, he will be sick everywhere.

Babies should be burped after every feed, but sometimes no burp comes out. Sometimes it's because they didn't take in air that needs burped out but also sometimes, especially as a ftm, you might be patting too lightly or they need a different position. I found i burped too lightly at first, and then as he got a bit older I found he needed to sit on my knee and lean forwards a bit to burp rather than on my shoulder, because when he was on my shoulder he curled up and it stopped the burped coming out, but on my knee he was more upright

I don’t burp my baby … especially not at night.. if she needs to burp , she burps on her own … here is an interesting article https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/did-you-know/did-you-know-you-dont-need-burp-babies

It depends on their age, any less than a few months then yes! Once they get trapped wind it’s so uncomfortable for them and there’s not a lot you can do but watch them be in pain until it comes out eventually and it isn’t nice. If my baby falls asleep before I get to burp Him then I leave him be but apart from That I always try to get at least 1. I’d say if you’re burping for more than a few mins with nothing then don’t worry too much.apparently not all babies do need to be burped, but the majority do. Just try different burping techniques as all babies are different which is why maybe you aren’t getting many burps? X

Do you breastfeed? Breastfed babies don’t take in as much air as bottle fed so many don’t need burping at all. If baby isn’t burping then don’t force it

Hes had a feed at midnight, 3am and now, still nothing, i know this isnt normal?

@Gem no i dont i bottle feed

Just try and burp them, but don’t worry if a burp doesn’t come up - it won’t always and that’s fine, you can’t really do much about it. He may be sick when you put him down, but as long as you’ve tried your best to get a burp then that’s all you can do. Look into some different burping positions than traditional ones if need be. Our daughter always managed to let her wind out, and was still sick everywhere all the time due to reflux. Sometimes she needed a longer burping session and sometimes a shorter - we found that pausing feeds every few oz and burping at intervals helped her a lot.

Hi Nicki, how old is your baby? my daughter didn’t burp for the first 2 weeks and I felt that I’m doing something wrong. I don’t know what’s changed but it’s easier now. I put her stomach on my boob for the pressure and trying to straighten her legs as much as possible, so she is not curled. But sometimes it doesn’t work at all. Also I can tell when she needs burping, when I put her down and she is wriggling and can’t settle. Then I pick her and try again. My daughter spits up a lot so I keep her upright for 20 mins after every feed, that’s a nightmare when she eats in every 2h sometimes 😂 because I basically feed, keep upright and feed again 😂 good luck with everything! You are doing great!

@Gem that’s not true. My EBF baby needs burping mid feed and after every feed. I’d a common misconception that breastfed babies don’t need burping. They do

@Donna Woods I put “MANY” don’t need burping. which is true. No that isn’t the case with all babies but it’s definitely less likely to need to burp a breastfed baby than it is a bottle fed baby. Did you even read my comment properly
