Constipated newborn

Hey moms, I have a newborn, 1 month old. Hasn’t pooped since 1am this morning so we’re coming up on 24 hours, hasn’t slept all day, very obviously uncomfortable. I’ve been doing the crunches and belly rubs, we did the warm bath, gave him some gas relief drops. He’s farting just not pooping. Any tips? Thank you!

is he breastfed or bottle fed? x

We had this, my midwife told me to get a cotton wool ball, and wet it in some warm water and massage his bum with it, and it helps with stimulating the area x

@Tamzin both. He’s mainly breastfed and I supplement with formula.

This happens to my little guy all the time. Started around the same age as yours. When I consulted the doctor, they said not to panic or worry unless it has been 7-10 days with no poop. Now, at 5 months old we have added Biogaia probiotics to his daily routine and it does wonders! I do all the same tricks and just keep repeating them. You can add the bicycle legs in there as well. He will go soon! Hang in there!

They can go a few days! I know that sounds crazy. Breastfed babies can go up to 10 😬 However I couldn't let it go that long and use fridababy windis 😊

around 1 month some babies can start to only poo every other day sometimes every 2 days. if he’s still feeding the same amount and still having frequent wet nappies he should be fine. if your really concerned book a GP appointment xx

@Kelsey 7 to 10 days seems so long! Thank you for your reassurance. I feel so bad for him.

@Rheanna just added these to the Amazon cart! This isn’t his first time so I feel like this is going to be a regular thing. So I’ll give those a shot.

@Tamzin thank you. He is still peeing, he’s not dehydrated. He’s just clearly uncomfortable. Poor sweets. Thank you for your response! I appreciate it.

They don’t poop as often as bigger babies as they are taking all the nutrients out of the milk. There’s little waste, my first baby could go days and days without a poop.

If you’re using formula you can get the small premade bottles of that formula if it’s Kendamil or cow and gate (only ones I’ve seen with premade bottles) and give a couple of ounces of that as them bottles for some reason work like a laxative. Tip a health visitor gave me one day x

I know people are saying it’s normal for them not to poop for a few days but it still can make them super uncomfortable and in pain. This started happening a few weeks ago with our little guy. Our pediatrician said to give him 1oz of undiluted apple or prune juice once a day and see if that helps. It helped some but still not quite fully so we got prescribed lactulose for him to take which definitely has helped. Also going to start adding in probiotics once a day for him.

try massaging his little belly softly with the tips of your fingers or try gentle bicycles x

Doing bicycle kicks with his legs help get everything moving around. Works great with my son maybe it will with yours aswell

1 oz of pear juice worked wonders on my boy apple juice kinda worked and pruned juice did nothing for him

Please do not give a baby under 6 months anything liquids beside milk, water, fruit juice ect can kill them, cause kidney damage, renal failure, swelling in the brain, seizures, brain damage. Just isn't worth it for a bit of constipation even of a GP recommends it do not do it they aren't trained in baby medicine enough to know the implications. Use baby approved and baby safe medication for the correct ages do not use or give anything unless recommended by a paediatrician the risk is so not worth it. Just because other people got lucky and their babies didn't get harmed by giving water and fruit juice doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of babies who did suffer and yours very well could to. Not worth it if it's that bad get baby safe laxatives from a doctor only. But there are other things u can do like other comment said such as massages n bicycle legs x

This happened to my LO around 2 months old. He was going only every 7-8 days! Was crazy. 1oz of prune juice helped get things going for us. He is EBF and we found out during his 4 month check up that he likely has a dairy allergy/body has problems processing dairy and that was why he went so long between bowel movements. I’ve since removed dairy from my diet and he poops regularly 😅. Sucks for me, great for him lol.
