Does your OB give ultrasounds?

I went to my first appointment today and this is a new OB in a new state and she couldn’t give me an ultrasound until the tech comes in (meaning I come back another day) I’ve never heard this before and I’m a bit alarmed

This is my 4rd pregnancy and I’ve always been given an ultrasound at the first visit to find out how far along I am or to at least hear the heartbeat. I recently moved to Texas from California and I’m concerned

No and its pretty common here in my state . They send you to an actual ultrasound tech. Only time she brought the machine out was because she couldn’t hear the heartbeat and even then it wasn’t her that did it, it was someone certified for that .

@Redss that’s insane to me. I’m high risk so maybe I’m just overly paranoid😭😭 maybe I was just disappointed because I was hoping to see baby and at least hear a heartbeat

I honestly would rather the tech do it because they are specifically trained and certified in that area . Don’t sweat it or panic

My current OB office has an ultrasound tech and I can’t remember who did the ultrasound for my first pregnancy but I don’t think it was my OB.

@Christina wow 🤯 I’ve never heard this before I’m just amazed right now

My OB would just use a machine to hear baby’s heartbeat and schedule me to go to the hospital for the ultrasound 🩵 I’m in the carrollton/plano area!

Where I am there are actual ultrasound places they refer you to, (walk in no booking) go there get the scan then they send a copy of that scan to the midwife/OB or whoever’s in charge of the pregnancy, the OB himself doesn’t do it. The radiation specialists do (they do X-rays there as well) but it’s another centre altogether.

My ob & his nurses CAN, but they have a tech in office & their equipment is much more modern & advanced compared to what the ob’s office alone has. And there’s a difference in billing.

My OB did the first ultrasound that they use to see how far along you are that is the vaginal one. She also listened to the heartbeat too at each visit. The actual ultrasound where they see everything that's done on your belly was by the technician and then I spoke to my OB immediately after. The last one that is close to delivery was by the technician too. Usually only get 2 or 3 in total unless there are special circumstances.

@Gwen I went 2 times a week starting at about 17 weeks 😭😭 it gets old but only 2-3 the whole pregnancy

I guess most states are this way this is like a cultural shock for me

My high risk OB did, but the regular OBs in my office would refer us out like a lot of the other people here have mentioned

My OB's office didn't have a tech, so I would have to go to the ultrasound tech across the street from her office for all the ultrasound appointments. Even with me being high risk, I went for weekly ultrasounds in one building and actual appointments in the other. It was all one hospital campus, just different buildings for me tho

That's so funny, i lived in FL and had an ultrasound sound (done by a tech) at all 4 visits. When i was 20 weeks I moved to CA and did not have another ultra sound (also from a tech) until a growth scan at 38 weeks.

I think it's bizarre to imagine an ob/gyn that DOESN'T.

@Tiffany righttttt!!!!!

It just depends on the office. My office in Tennessee will only schedule ultrasound appointments to be on days their ultrasound tech is working. My cousin in California has to schedule ultrasounds in a whole different facility when she needs them. Then they send the ultrasound information to her OB.
