Naked at the doctor

At what age does the doctor stop asking for your baby to be naked? I was just thinking about teaching them about privacy and private areas, not letting others touch them and how I would explain or handle when it comes to care providers

My son doesn't get naked at the doctor anymore he's 2. I think as soon as he could stand on the scale and not use the baby scale, she didn't bother stripping him.

@Chandra I don't get naked...

@Chandra right!! My Dr just had me strip naked completely I was like oh already we just met 😂 😂😂

@Annie wait so you don’t get physicals ? Pap smears?? Mammograms? Things like that

I think you gotta just teach them its a time and place , getting checkups and being examined is okay its for their health but for example “a dentist should not be touching your special areas” or a teacher ect

@Redss I haven't done a mammogram yet I'm only 28. But I've done one pap smear. Other than that...no I don't get naked. Like it's not routine for me

@Annie hmm thats very interesting 🧐

My oldest is 5 and we've been telling him for years that his private body parts are just for him, but sometimes people like doctors need to check them to make sure everything is ok, and they'll only do that while mom or dad is there

My daughter was 5 when I took her as she had a white rash so took off her top. As a parent you are with your children anyway at the dr until they are old enough to go themselves.

This must be an American thing... As I have never got naked for a doctor as an adult even a smear, I only dropped my trousers, didn't need a gown... And my baby doesn't get naked for the doctor either.

At my daughter's 2 year appt she was weighed with her clothes on standing at the normal scale, and once we got in the room they had her undress in a gown but diaper on.

@Emmo not an American thing. I’m just as confused lol. My son has never gotten naked and he’s just turning two. I did have to take his pants off for his vaccine shots in his thighs but that was ages ago. For myself, I’ve only taken my pants and panties off to get my lady bits checked. And that is rare

@Redss pap smears are every 3 years after 25 unless there's a reason to do more like family history or you have warning signs. Mammogram you don't tend to get until there are warning signs or a significant family history to check before like 50. And we don't get physicals. You see your doctor when you need them and usually it's a nurse anyways.

Except for her first visit my daughters not been naked at the doctors.

@Helen no maam here it’s every year at my doctors. & a physical every year as well . So its definitely different for every state or doctor I believe but only having ONE is definitely interesting. Thanks for the input

My kids' doctor always says to my babies, nobody's allowed to look here except your doctor with mommy or daddy in the room. This sounds reasonable to me.

Typical rules don't really apply to doctors offices/hospitals. There is no sexual aspect to anything that happens in a medical situation like that. Kids need to learn to trust their pediatrician/ practitioners and differentiate appropriate behavior from a medical professional vs someone else

I’d try having a conversation with them about where and when it’s okay to be naked. My 2 year old sees a GI specialist who often needs her to take her clothes off. And she goes to all of my appointments with me where I almost always need to be exposed at some point- breast exams, etc. I try teaching her “private parts need to stay private unless the doctor or mommy needs to make sure you’re healthy. We’re the only ones allowed to look under your clothes.” Those conversations will look different depending on the child’s age and comprehension. Most children should understand that there’s a difference between a doctor in a doctor’s office examining them compared to a friend touching them inappropriately.

The doctor still looks at your privates when you’re older, so you say, this is ok because it’s a doctor and because I’m right here with you, but no one else should look at your private parts.

@Chandra obgyn yes but not gp unless you have to

@Chandra I do not get naked at the doctor unless it’s a women’s exam.

At 2 they started giving my daughter a gown to wear. Diaper stays on.

This is so strange to me. I’ve never got naked for my doctor. I’ve had multiple smears and even colposcopy treatments and in all cases I take off my underwear/ trousers and that’s it. Gown over the top for the colposcopy. My child has never been naked for the doctor expect for when he was born, what possible reason could they need to see them naked unless you had a concern that needed looked at?

@Raqi I love how you word this! I will tell my kids the same

@BoyMom I have had two pediatrician offices & they ask you to strip the kids down to a “clean diaper”

@Tash they ask you to leave the diaper or underwear on, but I always assumed it’s because they might weigh more if they have extra clothes on so they want an accurate reading on weight. A part of me thinks they also want to check for abuse marks like bruises, cuts, etc.

I said 2, but I'm thinking that's old for healthy children/non addional needs where the specialist/doctors don't need to see it all over. For myself, besides when I've had surgery and gave birth, I've never been naked in front of a doctor. With my pap smears, I either wear a skirt or dress and hitch it up a bit. If I wore pants, there is a sheet over me, and the nurse is down there for 2 seconds, then dressed again.
