Car seat alternatives

Hi! I don’t have a car and therefore I would like to avoid buying a car seat just to pick my baby from the hospital. Is it really necessary? I keep seeing it in every hospital check list

No, my sister in law lives central London and they just went home in a taxi, you don’t need a car seat in a taxi it’s not a legal requirement

Unfortunately I don’t think they let you leave the hospital without a car seat, for example how will you be getting baby home from the hospital after giving birth so the no car seat? I think it’s a mandatory thing

Interesting. Lol i was just having this same conversation with my partner this morning. His boss lives in central london, and i asked him if they were required to take a car seat to hospital when they had their little one because him and his wife don’t have a car. My partner didn’t know. I will update if i get any more information.

We just brought our son back from the hospital in his buggy. He has a car seat but it's one he uses from birth up until he's out of a car seat. I told the hospital this and that we would be taking him home in his buggy and they were fine with it.

This will be my third baby and we didn’t have our car seat checked with either baby previously. They can’t force you to take baby home in a car seat, if you have a buggy what are they really going to say. We live in central London and haven’t used our car since August when we moved here and honestly it’ll probably be easier just getting home without the car so more than likely my husband will end up bringing the buggy when it comes to discharge. If your worried though just speak to your midwife about it and I’m sure she’ll know the hospitals specific policy x

I’m in the same situation, don’t really want to purchase a car seat just for the one taxi ride back from the hospital! But we will likely be getting a taxi as the hospital is not walkable from our house and don’t really want to get public transport with a newborn, so I’d love to know how people in similar situation managed it.

I think you can take your pram in and that’s also fine it’s just not carried out in arms from what I have read x (if you are taking them home in a taxi though I would get one)

@Caterina do you have any friends in the area who could loan you one just to get you home? X

I would be trying to loan one from someone if the hospital isn’t walking distance. Just because it’s legal, it is not safe to travel in a taxi without a car seat and I can’t imagine wanting to take that risk with a newborn.
