SMP / Tax

About to go on maternity leave and looking at financials and I get (I think); 22 weeks - full pay 17 weeks - SMP (£184 per week) Hoping to manage to be off for the full year so the remaining 13 weeks - no pay. Does HMRC automatically work out your tax payments on you only receiving essentially half your salary or do you need to recoup it following year? My salary is £60k so higher tax bracket but only 22 weeks of that is at least 1 or 2 tax brackets lower. Hoping they might not take too much off me when comes to SMP weeks?!

Following as I am interested and in the same boat!

For me they tried to keep up with it as I went, so when I suddenly went to SMP only it looked like I paid negative tax (as in they paid me some back) for a month or two. It was towards the end of the financial year and it must have taken me down a band or two overall, so I actually got more than SMP those months. Then once I was back I got taxed way less for a few months, and it's back to normal now, I went back in August after a full year off.

@Carole oh that would actually be ideal if it worked that way and SMO was a bit higher / spread it over the year
