There are certain conditions that are more prevalent among certain ethnicities, which is why my OB asked about it

There are some health conditions that are more common in certain ethnicities, it is very relevant for healthcare.

As mentioned above, it is important.

It's normal, not just because certain ethnicities are more prone to certain things, but it's also used to make sure people interacting with you are mindful and respectful if you are of a different culture and for demographic information purposes.

Ethnicity is very important for medical purposes. It can affect things like cross matching for organs/blood, how your body reacts to certain meds to genetic conditions prevalent in specific ethnic groups. It’s also important for statistics. It’s your genetic make up that makes you unique.

@Raqi thanks for clarifying! I have been pregnant before but its been a while so I dont remember this part.

@MK thanks for the clarification! I just wasnt sure 🙂

@Hessa very interesting! Didnt know they took this into consideration unless mentioned by patient. Either this has been around always and i just noticed it this pregnancy 😆 or its a new concept

@Sarah this is very interesting they actually keep track of this. I didnt know they took this much consideration tbh. I can understand all these reasons. It gives me peace of mind knowing its normal procedure. It only worried me a little bit because I didnt know if its necessary and if id end up with some racist obgyn once they know my ethnicity. (I am white passing but not white/Caucasian)

Yeah it’s really important for a lot of things that we don’t really think about. My friend is white but she’s from a small island in Greece and is struggling to find a donor match for an organ as our ethnicities affect things like this. Same with things like Sickle Cell, so in the US 1 in 12 African Americans have the trait but only 1 in 58,000 Caucasians. So knowing your actual genetic makeup makes medical care better ☺️

I'm white presenting as well, but I definitely make sure my ethnicity is known to my medical staff
