Weight

Feeling a bit deflated as LB (11 weeks) has just been weighed and has gained but not a lot and is now in the 1st percentile. He’s EBF and always been small, seems happy and alert with lots of dirty and wet nappies but I can’t help but feel I’ve not done what’s best for him by breastfeeding. I know that there are lots of benefits besides weight gain but I’m now questioning if he would be happier and bigger if we had of formula fed or combination fed. Am I being silly? Or should I switch to formula to see if that helps with weight gain? Send help! 🫠

Don’t stress yourself about it too much; you’re doing a great job raising a happy baby. 🩵 What did the hv recommend? What centiles has he been on previously? If he was always on the small side, (9th or under), I don’t think it’s always a concern. I think the guidance is if babies drop 2 or more centile gaps, they should be seen by the primary care team.

@Amy Thank you 💛 From birth to now he’s gone 32nd, 13th, 10th, 3rd and now 1st, so it’s generally been quite gradual but a pretty big drop from start to current. All the health professionals I’ve spoken to have been very relaxed about it all which is a relief in some ways, but I also thought you were referred to a paediatrics review if baby dropped more than 2 centiles but this hasn’t happened. I’ve got a phone call appointment today with the HV but she’s previously been quite happy as he’s always gained. Just hate feeling like I’ve done things wrong and they’ve negatively impacted him.

He might just be a small baby, my MIL was talking to me yesterday about how 1 of her sons didnt eat much and was a lot smaller than her second baby was, but by 12 they both had massive growth spurts and her first son actually grew taller and bigger than her second born by 15 even though her second born was always bigger to begin with, if hes happy and healthy you have nothing to worry about 🙂

I would chat to an IBCLC, as little one has dropped a few centiles - they will either reassure you or help you fix the problem! You can find one on Lactation consultants great Britain website xx
