Tongue tie?

Yeah that’s what my sons looked like. Can she stick her tongue out?

She can slightly stick it out but I don't know how far is normal. Really kicking myself for not getting it rechecked as I had to stop breastfeeding and exclusively pumped. Now we're on formula as pumping was too much. Not that there's anything wrong with formula, but I feel I missed out

I got my sons cut at 10 weeks cause it was affecting his weight gain and feeding but I had to pay private. The hospital, the health visitors and the visiting midwives all dismissed me as it was “cosmetic”. Went to see the infant feeding team for a supply issue and they were so angry it was ignored. They offered to refer him but the local trust won’t cut it after 12 weeks and there was an 8 week wait so I looked for private and he was seen the next day. My son couldn’t stick his tongue out and if he was crying his tongue couldn’t touch the roof of his mouth. He also took 2/3 pulls of milk and only 1 swallow as the milk transfer couldn’t happen due to his tongue tie. Don’t kick yourself, multiple people have failed to help you but you have made sure she is fed and healthy and that’s all that matters. I moved onto pumping and formula cause it was getting bad xxx

@Sarah how did you find a private clinic? Just Google? I feel like checking for a tongue tie should just be a routine check before you take baby home.

@Chloe there’s lots of private clinics but I called the private children’s ward of my hospital. Got an appointment the next day at 4pm and it was done in 15 secs. It should be routine, considering they push breastfeeding but the basics like tongue tie are left unchecked affecting mum and baby xxx

Has your son latched since? It's too late for me now as I stopped pumping 3 weeks ago, but I don't want it to impact speech later on so will still have it done.

Yes, he’s latched and feeding better. Gaining weight too. I was told his was quite severe and definitely would have affected his speech in the future. It was about £400 but it’s done and it’s made all the difference to us (sleeping through the night now as he’s not hungry is priceless) xx
