Allergies

Has anyone else developed an allergy after having their kid and then the sudden allergy magically disappearing a few years later? All my life I grew up on whole milk and all dairy, after giving birth to my daughter I developed a lactose intolerance but recently (3.5 years later) I can now eat it all with no problem. Should I consult my dr?

Okay so. Pregnancy does wack things to your whole body, and the hormones produced during delivery likely triggered some sort of gut reaction that led to not enough lactase being produced in the stomach, or the gut lining being irritated. As hormones shifted with time and the gut microbiome shifted, the lactase enzyme built back up. This is my guess! Lactose intolerance isn't mediated by the immune system (not an allergy), but it's possible that you DID develop a milk allergy that presented with GI symptoms. Wild!

@Finn thank you so much! This explains so much!

During pregnancy I was able to eat dairy products even though before it’d break my skin out. Now I’m back to not being able to tolerate it. I do find myself very itchy in the eyes and face from my cat now though. I am a cat person so it’s worth it.

hmm, that's super interesting! I’d say it’s probably worth chatting with your doc just to be safe, but yay for being able to enjoy dairy again! I actually checked the 'Heal Baby Care App' for this and here’s what it says: "It's not uncommon for women to experience changes in their bodies, including allergies or intolerances, during and after pregnancy. Some people may find that these changes are temporary and resolve over time, as you've experienced with lactose intolerance. While your situation sounds positive, it's always a good idea to consult your doctor if you have concerns or if you notice any unusual symptoms. They can provide personalized advice and ensure everything is functioning well. Have you noticed any other dietary changes or symptoms since your daughter was born?

@Susan no other dietary changes.
