Tongue tie revision

My 7 week old is having some issues with weight gain. He is gaining weight but not as much as they expect him to. We are ebf. He will feed for around 5 minutes, it seems that he can drink the let down but once he has to suck to get the milk out he stops. He has been diagnosed with tongue tie but multiple professionals told me it doesn’t need to be done because he can move his tongue properly so they said they don’t see the point of him getting it done. I’ve only manage to get A deep latch few times and I’m guessing that’s why he doesn’t then drink the milk properly. I’m wondering whether he’s not gaining enough weight because of the tongue tie but not sure whether to get it done based on what professional are saying. Would love to hear some positive stories and whether it’s affected your breastfeeding in a negative way at all as I was told it might not help at all

Afraid I can’t speak for breast feeding but we had our son’s tongue tie cut around 10 days ago at 7 weeks and he’s like a new baby. I didn’t realise how limited his tongue was, now he can’t stop moving it around and smiling. It’s such a quick procedure. I wont sugar coat it, it’s horrible for about 30 seconds but afterwards you just feed them and my son was asleep in his car seat before we left the appointment. You then have to do some exercises to stop it merging back which aren’t fun but it’s worth it in my opinion. My babies latch changed so much we had to change bottle brand so I can only imagine the same change would be for BF. We were told if we didn’t get it done then it would potentially impact eating and speech in the future and the longer you leave it, the more ‘pain’ they feel cause the nerves develop so we just opted to have it done now. If they are under 8 weeks it makes watching their jabs a breeze 😂

@Sophie can I ask how is he like a new baby? What’s changed? Guessing they cry a lot ? How long do you do the excersies for ? Could he not latch on the bottle either? What symptoms did he have prior to the procedure? See I would get it done but all professionals re telling me that he don’t need it because he can move his tongue properly so I’m confused

we got baby checked at 3 weeks old as he wasn't latching I was convinced and the maternity unit assessed him and said it was a minor one and mad me feel bad by saying it doesn't need to be cut don't cause pain for no reason. when he was 6 months so all those weeks we suffered I was still saying to my husband something was wrong we got him privately checked and turned out it was and they were surprised at how active he was. soon as the procedure was done my baby was a new one, we did take him to osteopath for few sessions which relaxed my lo and he seems to be doing really well with food and drink. tongue tie is usually connected to reflux.

We thought our boy could move his tongue just fine! He could move it side to side, poke it out (not far) but he had a 75% posterior tie. The woman showed it to me before she cut it and it was quite bad. He also had no of the common signs like weight loss, clicking when eating or dribbling food so if I hadn’t gone private I wouldn’t have picked it up. He had very bad silent reflux, whilst it hasn’t cured it 100%, I would say it’s 80% better than it was. He used to scream through feeds, arch his back, guzzle milk and then give himself gas/belly problems, Now he generally only fusses if he’s been asleep for a while and gulps down a bottle. In terms of latch, his latch was never brilliant on me or the bottle. We couldn’t BF and that’s probably why but he had an OK latch on Mam bottles which have a flat teat, after the tongue tie he could hardly drink from them so we changed to lanisoh which is meant to be closer to a nipple and he latches really well with splayed lips.

@Sophie yeh they said my baby can lift his tongu to the roof of his mouth, stick it out and move it side to side so they said he don’t need it cut but yeh we’re 7 weeks in nd it still feels odd. The symptoms he has is slow weight gain, feeds for short amount of time and very often. He does sometimes arch his back so maybe it’s silent reflux. I’ve got an appointment on Friday so will see what they says about it.

I’m guessing this is NHS? If you have the funds to go private then I would recommend it. For the assessment and cut plus support after, I paid £150 and i personally think it was the best money I’ve spent since he’s been born. Good luck, I hope you get it sorted xxx

@Sophie this was NHS. I’ve got an appointment with private clinic tomorrow. Can I ask how did it change the breastfeeding after the cut ? Xx
