Advice

Hi everyone! This is my first time being pregnant I’m in the second trimester 15 weeks. I have had type 1 diabetes for over 20 years (and always had relatively good control) but wow this is the hardest time I’ve ever had with it. Recently started on the ypso pump, my hospital are supportive but my blood sugars are more up and down then when I was I Injecting (but I’m not sure if this is because of the pregnancy hormones). I just feel so drained with both the pregnancy tiredness/sickness and with the pressure of blood sugars being up and down plus juggling a busy job. Any advice or anyone who wouldn’t mind chatting to me I’d be so appreciative? I’m feeling a bit alone with it all (even with a lot of support from my partner and family) it would be fab to speak to someone who is also T1. Thanks so much 🩷

Hey I can’t relate so much, please don’t feel alone. Type1 is a 24/7 job already! I’ve had it for over 35 years now and we thought we were unable to get pregnant. We now have our miracle two babies and going well. Managing diabetes throughout pregnancy is hard but you need the support from your team and others always helps. Gimme a shout if you need to talk/chat/ message anything really. X

Congrats by the way ❤️

Hi Lucy, firstly congratulations! I have a healthy 4 month old and navigated T1 pregnancy last year for the first time. Happy to chat , please feel free to message me. Either way, T1D pregnancy is hard, but you’re probably l doing way better than.what you think you are

Stay hydrated idk I don't have full on diabetes but I've noticed when pregnant my sugars are so hard to control If I don't have tons of water the little vampires steal all your fluids feels like you're in the desert just dehydrated

Hi Lucy, you are not alone! My first pregnancy I found really hard with T1D until about 20/24 weeks then it did settle down. Get anti sickness medication from your doctor if your being sick, I found not being able to keep meals or fluids down was causing even more havoc for my diabetes! Pregnancy hormones are a nightmare on sugars, before I knew I was pregnant this time round I was in the clinic with unexplained highs! It’s hard work but you are doing an amazing job. I know your still in second trimester but I would say when you get closer to due date listen to your diabetic team over the consultant, it might be different for you but I found my diabetic midwife pushing for a c - section at 35 weeks, everyone else wanted to wait and induce for a natural birth saying ‘the diabetic team always want c sections’ I ended up having four failed inductions and an emergency c at 35+4, this time I’m listening to my diabetic team above everyone else! Feel free to message Xxxx

Hi Lucy, I’m currently 31 weeks pregnant with my first. I’ve been type 1 for 27 years and finding navigating T1 control through pregnancy abit overwhelming at times too. I was offered a pump but was told I wouldn’t get it until my third trimester so turned it down as knew there would be a period of instability with adjusting to it. Feel free to msg and chat as it can deffo be a lonely experience!
