Tongue tie

I think my 3 week old has a tongue tie... it doesn't affect him eating (BF). I mean, it was a point where it was kind of hard for him to latch to my left breast, but it wasn't a cause for a concern. He gains weight and latch really good. I'm just wondering why they didn't bring it up in the hospital when I had him? I'm going to talk to his pediatrician about it. Has anyone else been through the same? What was done about it?

My youngest has a mild tongue tie, but since it didn't impact her gaining weight or feeding, I chose not to have it revised

If it does not effect the eating, I would leave it

They don’t check for it in hospital as it’s diagnosed when they have issues. I asked my midwife when I gave birth as everyone in my immediate family has had them.

@Raqi @Haley I heard it could it affect his speech as he gets older... his dad has a speech problem, but idk if he has a tongue tie

Mine had one, but it wasn't picked up at the hospital at all, and it was quite a significant one, apparently. It was only when I was home, and one of the midwifes saw it when she was crying and put a referral in for it to be snipped. Ended up getting it snipped twice as it reattached. They thought it was affecting her feeds, but it wasn't the tie that was an issue with her feeding. She couldn't latch onto a bottle correctly due to her mouth shape, and a high pallet apparently 🤷‍♀️ But at the time, i didn't have a clue about any of this. As no one showed me how she was supposed to be drinking, etc at the time

They said my daughter had one when she was a baby, but it wasn't affecting her, so we left it, and she's got great speech, she's 3.5 and been talking in full sentences since she was 1

I was told that if a tongue tie isn’t affecting feeding, you shouldn’t try to get it cut. Sometimes the scar tissue from the procedure, can affect feeding more than the tongue tie itself. I wouldn’t worry, if there are speech problems down the line then you can deal with them then, but I wouldn’t personally risk it affecting feeding ❤️

I was told my daughter had mild tongue tie when she was born but I decided not to have it done. She fed absolutely fine and we continued a very good breastfeeding journey to 3.5 years. In my experience the doctors/nurses aren't always right!

@Nicole obviously talk with your doctors but my sister is a speech and language pathologist and says it is rare that it affects speech and she never recommends it in regards to speech. The evidence is just not there

My son’s tongue tie wasn’t picked up until after we were home. Some midwives aren’t trained to spot a tongue tie. We got ours divided as it can cause problems later in life if left untreated. My brother in law is 40yrs old and his tongue tie was never fixed. He struggles with speech sometimes and has been told his voice would be different if he’d had his tongue tie divided! So strange isn’t it x

@Nicole we haven't noticed any effects on our daughter's speech, but she's just now 22 months so her speech is still developing. There are things like tongue stretches and exercises that can help improve your son's range of motion as he gets older, a lot of it just seems like playing to them (ie mimicking you as you make different silly faces.)

Our little girl has a slight tongue tie and it was only picked up because we were struggling to get back up to birth weight with solely breastfeeding. We've chosen to leave it as she can feed but gets tired breast feeding particularly and we're in a comfortable combi feeding routine now. It also doesn't necessarily resolve feeding issues and can set you back as they almost have to learn how to use their new tongue again (advice from the health visitor when I asked for more information) x

my daughters ped missed it and didn’t believe me when i told her she had one lol. they didn’t do anything to correct it and now she’s going on 15 months. THO i am going on 22yrs and i still have one too 💀. we did stop BF around month 2 tho bc i was having supply issues but idk if her tie had any affect on it

I'd cut it anyway as it affects speech, hinders top jaw development, can cause tightness in the neck, and shoulders.

My daughter is almost 3. She has a tongue tie and a lip tie. It never affected her bottle use or her current ability to eat. She can pronounce all the “difficult” letters as well that some children with tongue tie can have big problems with. I didn’t find out about her tongue tie until her first dentist appointment (before 1). Hospital never saw it and pediatrician never looked because there was no concern. I never removed it because there’s no need to in our case.

We had my sons clipped pretty early on. It was super quick and he didn’t cry at all and he didn’t show any signs of discomfort. I was more anxious about the whole procedure than anything. With our son, we didn’t have any stretches or exercises to do post procedure but I would imagine that may be a thing for older kids? I’ve been told they’re genetic (I apparently have one, who knew!). I’ve also been told they can grow back so that’s something to keep in mind. The ent doctor we saw for it said if you’re going to clip it, do it sooner rather than later.

I’d suggest cutting it. I had one when I was little and got it cut late and couldn’t talk until I was 4. Then that made me behind on school and had to do speech therapy for years

My second was born with a really bad tongue and lip tie. My midwife did an initial small cut for his tongue tie and referred me to a lactation consultant who helped us as he was unable to latch (had to feed with syringe 😔). He then went to a children's dentist to laser cut his ties. It was a grueling process cause we had to do the streches for him that took 6 weeks! but it helped so much! I would definitely get in contact with a lactation consultant and/or speech therapist to help guide you 🙂

My son had tongue tie and it was enough to prevent BF. We got the tongue tie fixed a week after he was born but by then he got used to the bottle and didn’t want to BF. It was horrible

My daughter had a tongue tie, it was having an impact on feeding so we had it cut. The doctor said we'd done the right thing as regardless of feeding, it could effect speech later down the line. Honestly the whole process was done in seconds, my baby obviously cried but after a feed she settled like nothing had happened. The rest of the day she spent sticking her tongue out 🤣 see what your doctor says but it's better to do it at an early age

They say if it doesn’t interfere with eating it’s fine because lids usually fall down and rip it open anyway. My friends 2 year old just did that. The hospital is never good at telling you these things, they never seem to notice, they only care about latch.
