Reflux worse after tounge tie?

Has anyone’s little ones reflux got worse after having their tounge tie cut? We had my little boys done 5 days ago and since then his trapped wind and reflux have got 10 times worse 🙈 can anyone suggest anything to help? He’s formula fed currently on cow & gate - we use a mix of a prep machine and ready made milk. I just hate seeing him in pain and not being able to help!

Were you given any exercises to do to help reduce reattachment and also improve the tongue function? If no, then it is likely that things will get worse and poor little one will end up with reattachment and scar tissue causing a tighter restriction

• Lansinoh natural wave slow flow teats • Were you given post exercises to retrain the tongue how to move properly? Releasing the tongue only deals with the structure, so it’s vital the tongue it’s taught how to move properly • Scrap the prep machine and use a Nuby if possible - prep machines pump so much air into the formula! • Try elevated side lying feeding, it’s a form of pace feeding and is much better for reflux babies than the cradle position as it reduces pressure and tension on their neck

It's strange that both times we had the tongue tie division completed by both NHS and private, neither told us to do exercises or aftercare. Just to mention, we didn't have the same tie cut twice, the first was a deep tie behind the frenulum, and the 2nd was the frenulum itself. It seems as though some believe in exercises being beneficial and some don't. From what I've looked in to there isn't a strong evidence base for doing the exercises, plus it can interrupt wound healing, potentially contribute to infections and cause pain. My friend's son developed a trauma from her completing oral exercises, so I'd approach them with caution. Just my opinion of course and I'd definitely advise you to do your own research and make your own decision. I'd potentially get a 2nd opinion if you can or contact where you had it done originally to discuss the outcome and see what they advise xx

Oh and just to add, I've heard it can get worse before it gets better, because baby is getting used to their new tongue function and learning to use it properly again, building strength etc. It's also probably sore and can take up to 2 weeks to heal fully. what bottles/ trays are you using? X

@Beth we use mam bottles as they’re the same teats as his dummies

@Beth nhs cut and run leaving mums you to struggle. A good practitioner will give exercises and feeding support. Exercises shouldn’t be traumatic and if you are then it’s not correct. (Wound massage which some people recommend should not be a thing!)

@Jazmin yes to elevated side lying! Not only does it take pressure off the neck.. try drinking whilst sitting up with your chin falling down and touching your chest - it’s not easy lol

We went private and he was a renowned practitioner. Im happy with my LO's treatment, im not complaining. The only reason we went private was because my baby was above 8 weeks when we realised he had a further tie issue and we wanted it doing quickly. I didn't do the exercises as I say, it was my friend. @Alice

We had to change our bottles after tongue tie cut, his latch completely changed and we couldn’t get a good latch on mam bottles at all anymore. We moved to lansinoh and they have been much better for us. We were told until the wound goes white in the first 48 hours we had to stretch it so it didn’t re-tie However the other exercises were hard to do. He wouldn’t stick his tongue out or suck hard on our fingers at all but as a couple of weeks past he almost re-taught himself how to use his tongue again. Now he never puts it away!

@Katie They're what we used originally but quite a tricky shape for baby to latch on to. It might be an idea to look at a more natural shaped teat such as lansinoh, dr browns narrow neck or Philips avent. We use Philips avent natural response as it doesn't drip at all and baby just takes what they want as it's vari flow

@Beth there’s a difference between wound care exercises and exercises to re-train the tongue how to move optimally

@Jazmin I know that. I'm a healthcare professional. Im not here to argue, just offering my opinion from experience, which is what the app is for. So please get off my back. I wasn't talking to you in the first instance.
