Teat sizes

I currently use mam bottles and teats for my 8 week old. I have noticed that he's taking a while to finish bottles sometimes approx 30 mins to finish between 3-5oz. He also dribbles milk sometimes with the newborn teat. So I have changed to the size 2 which is recommend for babies of 2 months and if they're showing signs of taking too long to drink on the previous size teat and falling asleep on it too.. I've changed to size 2 and it appears the flow is too much for him, and he guzzles the milk... I've had to sit him upright and pace feed for him to calmly drink the bottle. Any advice?

I’m in pretty much the same situation. I’m thinking if I continue with the pace feeding then he will gradually get used to the faster teats.

@Paige that's what I'm thinking at the moment... I'm thinking I'll continue with the new sized teat and see if he gets used to it?

@Megan yeah. The health visitor said it can take them some getting used to as they initially suck on it as hard as if it was the size 1 teat so it comes out too fast. So they need to get used to not needing to suck it as hard.

I’m glad you posted this as I didn’t have a clue until someone mentioned the other day!

@Paige I think I'll try and keep at it with him 😊

@Gemma it's a minefield to be honest!

When reading your post it makes sense though some bottle can take 20/30 mins others 45/50 whilst falling asleep! Just need to keep an eye on the teat during night feeds to make both our lives easier 😂

I think that’s what you’re supposed to do anyway? We’ve been doing that since our little one was born. We’ve just upped her from size 0 to size 1 and she was the same for a few days whilst she got used to the new flow but she’s not as bad now, however we do stop her every 20-30ml to slow her down more

My baby had this just a couple of weeks ago and she was the same with the guzzling and appearing like it was too much but she is now very happy on the size 2 teats! It just took a little while for her to adjust to the size 2.

Update from me: my little one has taken two bottles on the teat a lot better this afternoon. Paced feeding and having him quite upright is working well for us 😊

@Jennifer how old is your little one? My boy is 9 weeks now and I still use the size 0 teat on Mam bottles, the size 1 seem to be to much for him when I tried them previously but now wondering if I should just change them and him get used to it 😕

@Charlotte she’s 7 weeks ☺️ We thought that size 0 was too small because she was falling asleep after or in the middle of each bottle, plus she was taking 30-40 minutes to finish a bottle (longer if she was falling asleep in the middle) so we swapped to size 1. We thought size 1 was too big to begin with but tilted the bottle down and the teat up more so that it wasn’t pouring (dripping) into her mouth, she was actually having to take it, and stopped more often whilst she took a breather. She was spilling some to begin with where she was taking too much I think and did choke herself a few times but after 1-2 days she was ok and she got used to it. She drinks a lot better now and is finishing her bottles within 15-20 minutes

@Jennifer thanks, sounds like I need to move up a teat 🤦‍♀️

I found removing the bottle every now and then so they get used to the flow and eventually they’ll learn to take it slower. If that makes sense 😅 but every time you change it does take them a while to get used to it anyway xx

Took our 7w old ages to drink until we introduced paced feeding, now bottle done in 15mins x
