Constipation since weaning

My LO has been constipated for a few weeks now. He’s 7.5 months so has been weaning for around 1.5 months. He’s been on lactulose for 2 weeks now and it helped a bit but didn’t really soften his poos that much - they’re still clay like and he still strains when trying to poop. He’s on another powder form meds to help now. It’s heartbreaking watching him strain and push so hard and nothing coming out. I’ve been trying to get him to sip more water during meal times. He seems to be feeding okay on the breast as he’s still got good wet nappies. Have been doing tummy massages and bicycle legs and giving him prune puree etc. I honestly feel like I’m running out of ideas. Did anyone else’s baby experience bad constipation? What worked for them?

Got to make sure he’s drinking enough water to help digest the food properly. He needs to be drinking around 4oz of water per day. I always know when my little one hasn’t drank enough water over a few days as she becomes like this.

Thanks @Paige! I will aim for more water for him! I asked the docs the other day about water intake but she said she didn’t know and just said sips and more breastfeeding. Thank you!

@Paige Do you give water to your one only during meal times or throughout the day too?

Meal times if I give her any bits of food throughout the day and I usually give her a few sips when she wakes from naps. If it’s hot also try and give her bits here and there but only around 4oz. I usually just fill a bottle up to the 4 oz mark and then pour it in her cup here and there so I know her exact intake of water.

If they won't take much water I offer juicy food like watermelon , and pears etc xx

We ended up going to the GP because it was so bad and they gave us paediatric movicol. Half to one whole sachet in a 24 hour period. It worked way better than lactulose. I’ve been weaning since 4 months and she has only just stopped being constipated now. I think it’s just time, extra water and management with medication whenever it gets really bad. X

My girl was exactly the same, I went to Tesco yesterday and bought prune purée and it helped her poop heaps yesterday! She also slept all night where’re for about. Week she’s been up 4 times in the night so it’s great stuff and only 45p x

Prune or pear puree has helped my girl so much! She will eat a whole pouch of the ella’s kitchen ones and then the next day will do 3 or 4 poos 😅

I'm going through the same thing. I've stripped back my babies diet to fruit and veggies for a week or so and added a tiny tiny bit of juice to her water to get her to drink it. Hoping to see a difference

I have homemade pear puree, frozen, which I give her in the little dummy weaning thing (also helps with her teething). Prune puree should help also. And just be mindful of the foods that cause constipation. My daughter had an episode where she didnt poo for almost 2 weeks. This was when she was about 5 months and solely breastfed. We went doctors first, they gave her lactulose. Went back and they gave her baby movical. Eventually we went to A&E and they gave her a suppository and it worked within 45 mins. Her whole digestive system seemed to restart after that x

Should be sipping lots of water with every meal/snack. They should be given as much water as they want, provided it's in a sippy cup or open cup. This will help. As others have suggested prune puree can help, also warm baths, tummy time after eating, massage etc. If you make sure he's having plenty of water he should be fine with no need for meds.
