Holiday with baby

Planning to go on holiday in May with my 7 month old, he’s formula fed, what do I do about formula and bringing boiled water and rapid cool to the airport etc? And also where do I put the ready made bottles? It’s stressing me out!

You can bring as much boiled/cooled water as you need when travelling with a baby Also you can get boiled water from cafes etc too to make bottles x

I’ve already done one holiday with my little one and am due to go on another in two days! You can take as much boiling water through as you need as well as formula and food! I believe they test the ready made milks so only bring as much as you need for the flight and put the rest in your suitcase if you can to avoid wasting it all x

So can I take my boys normal changing bag with all his bottles etc inside? If I take pre made bottles, do they check at least one of those so I need to bring spare ? X

I am also going to holiday in may. We have 10kg for him, depends whoxyou fly with so we are going to use that amount to bring pre-made formula bottles as i really didn’t want to use there water. However for the airport we will bring bottles that we prepared at home.

I recently travelled for the first time and found going through security stressful so thought I’d give a few tips: 1. You can take everything you normally would through, but they will test it all and take everything out of your changing bag. I’d packed mine perfectly to the brim… so it was annoying have to repack it. I would only take what you actually need here. I took a whole flask of boiled water, nuby cool, powdered milk in premeasured pots and the bottles. In hindsight I’d probably just get a cafe to refill the flask on the other side. 2. You can take the buggy up to the gate, but going through security you have to take everything out of it and put it in the conveyor belt. One person said to leave it all (like her blanket, rain cover, snuzshade etc) and then the security lady shouted at me. The buggy then goes through the metal detectors. 3. Make sure two of you stay together taking baby through the metal detectors as you will have to pass the baby through from one another

Not knowing all of that just then got me flustered and stressed - so thought I’d share in case it could help x

Also, you really don’t need everything you think you do. I took so much stuff that I could have just done without for a few days … so when packing just think ‘could I survive without this’ - taking less stuff would have just made things easier

But if you aren’t a stressy person like me who doesn’t like to get things wrong - you’ll be absolutely fine and have a great time!!! x

Thank you for this! We have a joie stroller, it’s quite lightweight, will that be ok? Does the weight of changing bag matter if I’m taking lots of milk? X

In my experience they didn’t weigh or measure the changing bag at all. I had the yoyo pram which they did say ‘is that a yoyo?’ At check in so not sure what they say for bigger prams. But I’m sure you can take any pram to the gate. My sister checked her prams though and put baby in a carrier and I felt like she was less stressed than me! She’s travelled a fair bit with baby’s though so I think she just had so much less stuff than me. Getting on the plane seemed easier for her as baby was in the carrier, whereas we had to take baby out the pram and then carry the pram on and the changing bag and our bags and the baby and it all just felt like a lot!

Okay! And would I still be allowed a bag too? To take

Yes when we went I had two bags on the pram and a carry on case for myself. No one questioned the two baby bags or even weighed them.

Just to add on from all the above, if you're taking ready made formula milk bottles then you can do a click and collect from the airport (that way it's not included in your checked in luggage) assuming you are able to carry it! Same applies to nappies and swim nappies. If you're going short/ medium haul I'd make the milk just before you go through the gates, I just got boiling hot water from Pret. Carrier is much easier than taking your pram on hold luggage. Feed your baby as you're taking off. This helps massively with their ears popping. A dummy will also do so long as they are using it/ sucking whilst take off. You can also feed baby as you're landing. This really helped me!

Ahh ok thank you, I might do this too!

Have the bottles with formula/ milk and water at easy reach, these will be checked thoroughly at security.

How do they check the formula??

It's put into some machine type thing they have at security. That's the only way I can explain it. Kind of like a microwave.

Do they take formula out of the packaging?? Do they pour it out sort of thing lol

If it’s unopened no but if it’s opened they sort of wipe the external area over with a probe which gets checked so they don’t ever actually touch the formula itself x

Ah right ok! What do we do for formula on the way back from the holiday? Are we still able to take the formula back in the same way we fly out sort of thing? Sorry I’m proper overthinking haha never travelled with a baby lol

Haha don’t worry it’s so much easier once you’ve done it you’ll relax. Yes same way back. It seems really overwhelming but it’s fine! Agree with earlier posts our first holiday with my son we took soooo much and had so many bags and that was the most stressful part. Really try and think could you do without it and it’ll make your journey so much easier x
