NHS employees

For those of you who are NHS employees (I work for Cardiff & Vale, for reference). I suspect the majority of my pension contributions since the beginning of my maternity leave (at the start of 2024) have been too high i.e. % too high. I’m sure I have paid the percentage as per full time wage, rather than mat rate. This only dawned on me this month when my first part time wage was possibly 3% higher in contributions than I’d estimated. I don’t know why? I rang the Pensions Department & was advised to email. I have done last week, no reply yet, just a delivery receipt. No read receipt but I suspect this may be declined. Any advice, please? Has anyone been in a similar position? Does anyone know the turn around time for Pensions to respond etc? Thanks!

My colleague commented before how high her contributions were too so I’ve opted out of paying my pension whilst on mat leave xx

I also opted out instead of paying while on mat leave! I'd email everyday honestly, don't let them ignore you!! When I opted to pay back in they replied within minutes so they do check! X

Sorry to jump on but I’ve just come back off maternity leave, is it possible to claim back what I paid into my pension during that time? I didn’t know you could opt out!

I believe I opted out of paying into my pension while I was off, definitely send daily emails until you get a response

Thanks all! I considered a pension holiday but really didn’t want to do that. I will keep on at them - I’m sure I’m owed a few hundred pounds, which I was going to leave until I saw the unexplained high percentage this month 😅 Sorry @Cerys I think you’d have had to of opted out beforehand. You can still opt out now and have a break for some time ☺️
