Losing steam

I’ve been applying for months now and while I’ve had a few interviews nothing comes through. I’m supposed to hear back about a fellowship in a few weeks and if I don’t get this idk what to do next 😩 My unemployment is done and I’m feeling the pressure and don’t want to run through my savings! Despite the “right” degrees and notable experience it’s DRY out here. Suddenly I feel like I dropped then ball on networking (after a while I just feel like I’m bothering ppl or run out of reasons to keep in touch) because that is the only way to get a job- skills and experience be damned. I took the plunge and reached out to my LinkedIn network and heard back from maybe 2 ppl and it led nowhere- all I was asking for were leads not even references… 10 years in the field to be starting over, again.

It’s a tough job market right now! What field are you in? Is there a young professionals group in your area (I say “young” but the ones in my area are all ages).

This is a question about unemployment how did you get it approved and everything I’m struggling

@Allyson Arts- Museum Collections I’m a part of a few orgs and did a mentorship which was helpful but again didn’t lead to anything. However your idea about a professionals group-I’ll look into that!

@Kendra Budd I just applied with my state and they lmk within a week if I’m approved. I think you have to have worked for a certain amount of time and not quit. My contract ended and I guess my previous employer approved it? I’m actually not sure of the inner workings. If you ended on good terms- then you may want to ask them? Otherwise a quick google search of your area’s unemployment database and fill out the app. Hope this helps or leads you in the right direction!

I was a museum educator for a local history museum in my area. Developed educational materials, conducted research, created history presentations and tours for the public, and helped with cemetery preservation. I have a BA in Anthropology from the University of South Florida. I love connecting with fellow museum professionals! Currently not active in the field but would love to get back into it someday or figure out a way to do history/preservation work solo.

What state are you in? If in Florida, true to attend a FAM conference or present at one. I made lots of connections that way. If you’re in a different state that has a conference definitely attend! Make a business card you can pass out (containing your LinkedIn and other context details).

@Allyson That’s amazing! I started in curatorial and have been a collection registrar and digital archivist for the last 5 years. I’m in NYC. Which may sound like there are plenty of opportunities but everyone seems to be slashing budgets and it’s hard with little and inconsistent childcare to attend networking functions. So, I’m trying to find child friendly networking which does not exist… Yes would love to connect, you never know! I’ll pm you.

Yes please pm me! I would love to connect and discuss our field more, and learn more about your experience. Also happy to be someone you can bounce ideas off of. Maybe we can start a virtual networking group for moms in our field. Moms in Museums or something like that?

@Allyson love this idea!
