Baby’s weight & scans

I see lots of people on here knowing the weight or size of their baby at the moment, I’m 34 weeks but haven’t had an NHS scan since 20 weeks which I think is normal? Midwife has measured my bump last few appointments, baby is on 97th percentile but following the line so haven’t been offered a growth scan. Anyone else in the same boat and really wanting to know if the baby is actually big/small? I also think he’s breech/transverse as he has been at all of my previous scans and would love to know for sure!

Yeah that’s completely normal. They only give growth scans to people with high risk pregnancies in case they need to intervene before babies due date

The midwife usually notes the position on badgers notes app but I reckon she'd have told you/ flagged before now if the baby was breech. They can feel what position the baby is in so they can tell you when they measure the bump. Not having growth scans is good though as apparently they are wildly inaccurate a lot of the time anyway and often lead to unnecessary interventions. I know not possible for everyone financially but have heard a few people paying for private scans when they were curious and wanted to know more at this stage.

Midwife should tell you the baby’s position during your appointments (just from feeling your tummy). Eg I had mine 34 appointment yesterday and she told me head down, bum sticking into my left side. It’s usual to not have any more scans after 20 weeks for low risk. But lots of people do end up having growth scans for various reasons.

I only got one because two different midwives measured the bump totally differently, so it seemed like he had shrunk! If it wasn’t for that my last one would have been 20 weeks too

I know it’s easy to say because I’m having growth scans but honestly I wish I wasn’t. Obviously it’s lovely seeing baby and having that reassurance but I pretty much leave every scan even more stressed with another thing to worry about. The measurements are normally way off but you still can’t help but worry about all the different numbers you’re given. Until baby is born there is no guarantee on size and obviously it’s good to know position but they can still flip right up until 37 weeks and some babies even manage to at 38/39 weeks so again there’s no definite until actual delivery. Sounds like baby is growing well and I’m sure your midwife would flag up if there was any concerns x

@Kirsty thank you! I have had a few private ones, the last one being 28 weeks and he was in the breech position then and I feel like he hasn’t moved since. My midwife hasn’t mentioned it or written notes on the badger app, but I’ll check with her at my next appointment xx

@Lucinda yeah I had a midwife and student midwife in an appointment once and they were both measuring my bump differently, around 3cm apart, they ended up with about 3 different measurements and went for one in the middle 😂

@Gemma I can imagine the added stress!! Thank you for the reassurance 💕

I am exactly the same. It would just be nice to see baby again and have some reassurance x

I went in twice for reduced movements in 21 days so had to have a scan based on hospital policy - I was 32w at the time and she was breech but they weren’t concerned because still plenty of time to turn!

I just had a sizing scan last night because at 28w+4d the midwife & student midwife measured my bump as “small” and then 31w+4d a different midwife measured my bump as “big”… the scan has measured baby as being perfect size so it’s all fuss and stress over nothing. I wasn’t bothered about being sent for the scan yesterday (currently 32w+5d) as I know my body isn’t going to grow a baby that is too big for me to birth but it was nice to see baby again!! Not all trusts use the Badger app (mine doesn’t) so we don’t have anything to look at other than the print outs we get from the midwives at the time of visiting them for check ups xx
