Gestational Diabetes

I’ve just been diagnosed with GD at 34 weeks. I dreaded having to go through it again as I had it with my first but I passed the first gluecose test early in this pregnancy. I’ve been advised to change my diet and lifestyle but it doesn’t seem to be working and the doctor really scared me with all the risks of having GD. Is anyone else going through this?

Which part are you concerned about? I had it in my last pregnancy but passed my glucose test however they think I do still have it as I have too much water which can be a sign of it. Just watch your sugar and carb intake abit for the last few weeks, is baby growing too big?

I had it in my last pregnancy and passed two GTTs this time but have just been diagnosed at 35 weeks as I've been having some random high readings when monitoring. I don't have my next appointment with the diabetes clinic until next week again, but just trying now to be very mindful with diet like last time. I am gutted though and disheartened but we can do this xx

@Lauren Yeah I’m trying to watch my diet but I still get high sugar readings here and there. I have a growth scan coming up so they’ll check how big baby has gotten but so far so good from my last scan

There’s a group on Facebook which was recommended by other people who have GD, unsure if it’s any use for you. 😊 https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1AL6XLjn4u/?mibextid=K35XfP

For me, it took about a week of minor adjustments to see my numbers improve with diet/exercise. It might just be your body needs some more time to respond to changes? That being said, my doctor told me to call in case I had 3 high readings 3 days in a row, so they could put me on medication to help manage better. Most of my numbers have been good, apart from the fasting ones, so I have since started medication. It can all get a bit daunting and overwhelming but as long as you are following the instructions you were given, you will be fine. If you are getting too worried, give the doctor a call and explain why so they can better support you - stress can actually make the glucose levels rise too!

@Rachael Thanks for this

@Vanessa Thanks. I’ve noticed my fasting sugar levels are usually on the high side as well. I’ve tried having dinner earlier and getting more active as well. I’m only 3 days in so with time I guess I’ll figure out what works x

I had a growth scan at 32 weeks and baby is 5lb. Not sure if this is big or not so keen to hear how everyone else’s baby’s are measuring at this stage? I also have gestational diabetes x

I have had high readings every day for the past two weeks and yesterday was prescribed the slow release metaformin x

Fasting numbers are the hardest to control! As soon as they saw my fasting numbers I was put on medication. I opted for insulin over metformin, and I’m on 30 units a day in the evening and I’m now finally getting lower readings. Don’t feel disheartened if you have to go on medication, the fasting numbers are because of the placenta and sometimes only medication helps!
