Just be sure to watch it carefully for any color change, as the hernia can become "incarcerated" (trapped between the abdominal muscles) and lose blood flow, which requires emergent surgery.
My little boy was also born with an umbilical hernia, they are more common than you would think! His also would protrude more when crying, coughing etc because the tummy muscles tighten and push out! It does not hurt them in any way! You’ll notice sometimes it looks smaller than other days! It does in majority of cases go down on its own by the age of 4/5! If it hasn’t gone away by this age then medical intervention is required. My little boy Noah is now 5.5 months old and the hernia isn’t there anymore his belly button now is what is considered ‘normal’ ! Try not to worry yourself too much, google can cause a lot of anxieties especially when it comes to our little ones! They are very common and medical intervention is only required if it hasn’t gone down on its own by 4/5 years old xx
The majority of them do go away on their own with time. It’s rare to require surgery.
If it begins to change colour then seek medical advice but otherwise don’t push it in as it can get trapped in the abdominal walls, we just made sure any trousers weren’t sat directly across it as to not put pressure on it, pushing it in can cause issues later down the line x
Yes my son had one it does tend to pop out more when they cry, cough etc but it should go down on its own by the time he’s older. It tends to get bigger before it gets smaller and can look quite uncomfortable at times but it shouldn’t cause them any discomfort so I wouldn’t worry, My son is now 1 and it has shrunk a lot it just looks like a normal outie belly button. Surgery is only required if it doesn’t subside by the age of 5. Hope this puts your mind at ease x
Ps it will go away on its own 🙏🏽
I've experienced an umbilical hernia, my son got his at 2months old, he is now nearly 5months old and his hernia went away on its own, try not to let him cry to long, the more he cries the worse it got. If the umbilical hernia is hard to the touch and won't go back in and has any weeping coming from it then take him straight to A&E
Ours went away on its own. No products needed.
My daughter is almost 2 and she still has hers, it’s not like a balloon like it was but it’s not like it was
My son is 19m and still has it, we’ve seen a specialist who said they usually go away by 2 on their own, if still there by 5 they’ll operate but causes him no bother at all x
My son went through this when he was about 2 and a half months old! It seems a lot scarier than it is! It was an easy procedure that healed very fast and didn’t cause any pain for my son after surgery! Babies are more resilient than they seem! I think the worst part of the entire experience was just seeing my son come back to from the anesthesia and the waiting on the surgery to be done! Left a little x scar but you can hardly notice it!
My daughter had one when she was born. The dr said that they are very common. Hers finally went away on it's own. I think it took a few months but I can't remember exactly. It never bothered her.
It should shrink as they grow and you just need to keep an eye on it - make sure it’s soft to press on.
My sons went away on it's own. He also had an ingunal hernia that had to be operated on but his umbilical hernia went away within a few months x

My sons went away on his own, used a bellybutton band later on, but it would have just gone on its own anyhow.. No problems, and he doesn’t have an outie which is what I was worried about haha
Yes my son had one, he is 20 weeks now. It used to look like it was going to burst every time he tensed or cried. It has completely gone now at around 15 weeks and his belly button is perfect. I was told rarely surgery is needed and some children can have it up until two years old but keep your eye on it. I was also advised not to push on it.
My boy had an umbilical hernia too, it was really protruding and I was concerned about it, was told it will likely go away on its own, they wouldn’t do surgery or anything at this age anyway.. My baby was only 4lbs 11oz when he was born so it’s very noticeable as he was so tiny.. It seems now he’s grown a bit, that the hernia has settled down a bit now, I’d recommend addressing it at the 8 week check but they won’t do anything though x
We used a belly band from Amazon and it went down on its own!!
