Do I need a car seat for travelling?

Going to Tenerife tomorrow with my 6mo, I thought we would just hold him in our lap in the taxi from the airport but now I’m not so sure that’s safe, do you take a car seat when travelling?? It’s only 20ish minutes taxi but not sure if they’ll let him in without a seat? X

I took a car seat when I took a 9 month old to Tenerife as I personally wouldn’t use a taxi or any car with no child seat. Was better as we took the car seat in a box and padded the box with nappies and wipes and towels so basically was free extra luggage!

Definitely take a car seat, it’s illegal to not use it here for a reason. And it’s also illegal not to use one there

I’ve been asking this loads lately and have been told we have to take a car seat if using taxis. Apparently they can sit on your lap if you’re on a coach from the airport tho.

@Emy that's not correct info. Sadly it is legal to have a child in a taxi without a car seat in the UK Not safe though

I would take the car seat. But it will have to go in the hold so you'll need to package it up safely in a padded box to make sure it doesn't get damaged

@Charley that’s only for 3year plus here, deffo would not recommend for 6 month old! And in Spain you still need a car seat for taxis

@Emy it's for any age baby, whilst in a taxi you are not required to use a car seat

@Hayley they can but it also isn’t safe. We have upgraded to a private transfer for our holiday so that we can take a car seat. I wouldn’t risk my baby’s safety

Also regardless of if any place has a law that allows you not to use a car seat, why would you? It’s very dangerous

@Emy I'm absolutely not advocating for putting a child in a car without a car seat, but it's important not to spread false info. The law allows you to use a taxi without a child car seat.

@Charley I didn’t say you were. When I said it was illegal here in my first comment I meant in cars, and it is illegal not to use a car seat in a taxi in Spain which is where she’ll be. Plus if you can have kids in taxis seat free here, doesn’t make it safe so I deffo would not do it just because it’s legal so it doesn’t matter if it’s legal or not to me really, it’s a big no no safety wise

Wherever my child goes, their car seats go.

I brought a car seat with us. We held our baby during the flight, but brought the car seat for the drives. My car seat uses a base to click in, but also has the option to use a seat belt to secure it. We practiced using the seat belt to install so it was quick.

Just came back from Spain, we just hired a taxi and asked them to provide a car seat. Was fine.

If you don't want to take your seat, a Joie juva is often recommended as a travel seat. It doesn't have any inserts and isn't good for younger babies, but it's cheap and you can use the box it comes in to transport it!

I’m going to Crete in June with my girl who will be 15 months so older than yours but we have hired a car seat from our taxi that takes us from airport to villa x

I’ve always taken my infant carrier for the taxi ride, I did relax a bit last year and let my 2 and a half year old use a seat provided by the taxi firm but it was flimsy and clearly old, but 6 months old I would deffo take the car seat, even if it sits in the hotel room for the holiday, it’s worth it for the taxi transfer x

Usually you can hold your lo in a taxi, but not an uber. If you rent a vehicle, you either need your own or have to rent a car seat from the agency. Just make sure you are proficient at installing

Yes I take a travel car seat that’s light and folds up (fits in overhead). It’s the safest way to travel with baby xx

Yes you definitely need a car seat, unless you are able to book a vehicle that has one. Your 6mo will be a projectile in an accident and truly, without a car seat, will not survive. Not a risk you should take.
