CMPA

Anyone whose baby has CMPA how were they diagnosed and what were the symptoms? My baby boy is almost 5 weeks old and is formula fed since the second week. He is on aptamil and has between 3-5 ounces every 2-3 hours. He still has baby acne and it looks to me like it’s getting worse on his face, he also poos at least 5-6 times a day and they are quite watery, but then sometimes he seems constipated and struggling to poo. He is sick every so often and I put it down to drinking too much as it’s always towards the end of a bottle that is quite soon after the last feed. He isn’t a big crier but can be quite unsettled sometimes. We use dentinox at night as he sometimes struggles to get wind up but in the day it’s fine. My husband also has a dairy intolerance so wondering if it could be hereditary.

I’m in a very similar situation! My 6 week old baby has baby acne which only appeared about a week ago and it is slowly spreading all over her face. She also has bad reflux and gas, and she seems uncomfortable a lot of the time. She also has been very slow to gain weight but she’s gaining weight at a better rate now. Unsure if she has an allergy or if these things all can be relatively normal!

@Charlotte my son was also really slow in regaining weight, took him three weeks to get back to birth weight after he lost almost 10% of his birth weight. He hasn’t been weighed now for two weeks after being discharged from the midwife, might try and get him weighed this week to see how he is

@Samantha my baby was quite similar except she only lost 4% of her birth weight. We’re going to trial her on some hypoallergenic milk and see if it makes any difference to her and then go from there - It’s stressful!

@Charlotte which milk is that? He is quite a content baby normally so if he’s unsettled I’m sure there is something wrong

@Samantha we’ve just been prescribed Aptamil pepti 1 hypoallergenic formula to try out for 2 weeks. If it doesn’t make a difference we will try a different one

Hi Samantha, both my dec 2023 and March 2025 are CMPA. Symptoms for my dec baby were mucus poops and pooing during every feed and a few in between feeds. Red rash on face that she would try to scratch with her mittens on, sneezing and coughing, fidgety during feeds like she didn't want the bottle but would cry if bottle taken away, projectile vomiting, trapped gas. Drs prescribed, and she settled on nutramigen but due to supply issues given aptamil pepti and immediately had blood in her stools on every feed. Tried lactose free milk as it was too late for drs and desperate, and she still passed blood in the stools. Called 111, sent to urgent care, given Neocate LCP, and settled. Almost completed milk ladder now too, just can't tolerate neat uncooked cows' milk.

March baby, muscus in poops, bring legs up to stomach after feeds and also constipation, green specks in poop. Given aptamil, did really well and settled at first, then after 1 week Symptoms returned. Given nutramigen, projectile sick which had curdled, hives on face. Tried Neocate as still have tubs from Dec baby. Happy and settled at the moment. Just a FYI prescribed milk will cause babies poop to be green, and that's normal. X

I'm a FTM and my little one was diagnosed at 3 weeks. She has now been prescribed Aptamil Pepti 1. She had a very angry rash (different from baby acne) all over her face and head. She had hives on her neck and a bit on her chest. I was luckily in hospital for an infected C-section and one of the midwives was with me, but she started to projectile vomit her formula often. She had the worst painful trapped wind and nothing would relieve it, screaming in absolutely agony. She had poos like water. I had raised my concerns with the midwife at the time and she asked paediatrics to come right away. Paediatrics asked about my family history and I had anaphylaxis to cows milk aged 2. All the females in my family (sisters and cousins) all were allergic to cows milk. Paediatric team then felt that was enough evidence to give the diagnosis right away. However they normally like to wait until the child is at least 2 years old as the stomach isn't mature enough yet. My family history was the thing that got them to

Diagnose the condition right away so early on. It has taken my little girl about 2 weeks to really get her tummy used to having the new formula. She's much better in herself but her poos are quite smelly still. I think paediatrics warned me it could take a full 2 months to have her tummy and bowel settle. But goodness you can tell the difference.

Have you tried a different formula at all? I only say this as I know with my first born our doctors asked us if we’d tried different formula first. It took us forever to be listened to but primarily symptoms were- bad constipation (hard poos), rash, unsettled ALL the time (non stop crying and shrieking all the time no matter where he was). Our daughter is combi fed and we started with aptamil but found she didn’t get on with it so I’ve moved to hipp for the odd bottle and she seems much happier!

@Jane picked up some Kendamil today so will try him on that
