Opticians or physician?

the past 3 days, My 23 month old has been rubbing his eyes at different times of the day crying. At first I thought it was because he was tired and needed rest so I put him to nap or bed for the night and we are there for hours because I know it's not his bedtime yet. But he eventually sleeps. At night he wakes up multiple times crying and rubbing his eyes. It's been 4 days now and at this point I don't know if I should take him to an optician or our family physician. Please help. TIA.
