Canterbury/ RPA/ St. George’s Hospitals

Did you give birth in one of these hospitals? What was your experience? Would you go there again? I’m so in the beginning of my pregnancy and feel a bit overwhelmed I need to make this choice already. Any advice would be appreciated 🎈

I gave birth in Canterbury and it was great! My contractions started at 3am and I went to the hospital at 8am. Finally the baby came out at 11:30pm. The whole day, the doctors and nurses were amazing, helping me through the contractions that gradually got intense throughout the day. Even after birth, as it was my first child, they let me stay for 2-3 days as I didn't know how to feed the baby well (breastfeed).. Will definitely go again.

Hi Nataly, I was booked in to give birth with RPA had all of my appointment with them through the MGP program when it came to labouring they had no beds available after two days of labour at home I stood my ground and asked to come in RPA sent me to Canterbury and I could fault them! They welcomed me on a Friday night and listened to my needs I spent 3 days after emergency c section and the attention from midwives was amazing (even though they were run off their feet) I returned home and had home visits from midwives via the MGP program for two weeks which was really helpful. Overall the communication with RPA throughout my pregnancy was hard - hard to get appointments and ahold via phone but the aftercare was great. Delivery and care at Canterbury I couldn’t fault 🥰 sorry a lot of info haha

Thank you @Yasmine and @Jackie ! I really appreciate a lot of info, the more the better 😅

@Jackie I also have a lot of troubles getting the appointment with RPA. I’m due in June and still waiting for my first appointment.

@Aleksandra yeah they were pretty crap to be honest I remember calling constantly and through multiple lines - just keep calling and eventually you’ll get through. They were very thorough at the appointments though so that’s a plus

Wow, interesting reading these comments…. I just gave birth at RPA 10 days ago, and they were amazing. Went in for a couple of reduced feral movement scare scans, got paid full attention no worries. No issues getting appointments. One midwife the whole way through…. Text and after hours phone care. Emergency surgery after a complicated delivery and I was well looked after. Baby was sent to NICU and they were amazing with her as well. We were given a private room after the difficult birth so my partner could stay… midwife has been to our home 3 times in the week since we’ve been home. Once on Christmas Day! Excellent experience all round for us... (And the difficult birth was no fault of theirs… I had a rare condition)

*reduced fetal, not feral movements 😂

@Jenny thank you so much for such detailed response, I really appreciate it!

I birthed both my daughters at RPA (Oct 2020 and Aug 2022) as a private patient (w/ the care of a private OB). I specifically chose RPA due to the modernisation of the birthing suites compared to local hospitals and proximity of NICU/immediate care facilities. I could not fault the care and support during both my labours. The facilities, room and and health professionals, especially the L&D midwives, were phenomenal. My post care on the ward following the 2020 birth wasn’t the greatest - I was in a transit room for 14 hours, often left to my own devices, my discharge was delayed for no good reason and I found a few of the midwives blatantly rude. My second birth consolidated the reasons I chose RPA in the first place, as we knew our daughter would pass away after birth due to a life limiting condition and received brilliant pre, during and post care and support. I agree w/ other women that the admin and reg process requires much follow up but if you’re willing to pursue, it’s worth it

Thank you @Jess

Administratively RPA was a nightmare however, I had an incredible experience! I went in 3 times due to reduced movements and the level of empathy, care and thoroughness was amazing. On the day of my c section, I experienced the same. From the anaesthetist to the OB to midwife and baby doctor. I was public and had a private room due to a rather difficult birth.

@Nic sorry you had a difficult birth . Thank you for sharing

@Constance thank you for sharing 😊

UPD. Ended up signing up to Birth Centre at RPA - wish me luck 🙏😅
