Pacifier Gagging

My little guy is 7 weeks old today and he will not take a pacifier. We've tried many different kinds, the avent, the nuk, the mam. He is majority breast feed but used a bottle for the first two weeks and still takes a bottle at least once a day when dad does night feedings. Not only will he spit them all out but he's started gagging hard when one is put in his mouth, especially if we gently hold it in place. I can feel his little torso heave with the gag like he's going to throw up, poor thing. Has anyone experienced this? And if you have, has anyone gotten past it/found a pacifier that works? Really hoping for a miracle so my baby can self soothe a little. Attached picture of the ones we've tried

Mine didn’t use a pacifier until 3-4 months. Hated them. Just don’t use them 🤷🏼‍♀️

My baby like Tommee tippe breast like Pacifiers. She wouldn't take any if the other ones in the beginning. I got these and she loves them.

Every Child is different and different is ohkay. My son didn’t use a pacifier at all he never liked them until he was between 9-12 months

@MJ yeah we haven't been forcing it, but hes been sucking on his hand a lot and clearly gets a lot of comfort from that and nursing. he gets frustrated though when he can't get suction on his hand. I just want him to have as many tools as possible!

Happened with my daughter, she’s close to the same age. Mainly when she doesn’t want the pacifier. At that point we just avoided giving her the pacifier.

My LO is the same, and when he was checked for tongue tie they noted he had a really far forward gah reflex. He won’t take the mam ones you’ve pictured but he will take Tommy tippee as long as it’s not too close after a feed

My son had the same reaction. He's never taken a pacifier. He is 5 months now, and he's only taken it twice, only to spit it out a few seconds later 😅 there's an upside to this (in my opinion) you won't have to wean him from it when he gets older 🤷‍♂️ He'll find other things to sooth him to sleep, maybe try different kinds of swaddles, white noise, dark room. Goodluck mama

Thanks everyone! Baby is very soothed by nursing, I just want my husband to be able to soothe him in a similar way, as well as our childcare when I go back to work in May. It's helpful to know that he may just never like the pacifier though, and that it's not something I'm doing wrong. Thank you all!

If you can get one try the tommee tippee pacifiers my youngest and my eldest adored them

I use a MAM and My son gag on his pacifier when he doesn’t want it he will only use it at night or to nap and he spits it out. When he’s fussy I play “Colicky Babies sleep to this magic” on YouTube and he calms down but he doesn’t have colic.

Some babies just don’t take to dummies or not until they are older 3/4 months. I’d leave it for a few weeks then try again. My 8 week old is ebf and we have a Nuk dummy that he occasionally takes it’s very rare. He takes a bottle we use Nuk so the teat is the same

Same situation here. Every blue moon she’ll take the MAM pacifier but no others.

Have you tried using the same make pacifiers as his bottles

So my 1st born loved the mam and he took it from the start. He would sleep with it all night. My 2nd born hates the paci unless it's what he wants. He uses the green one on the left that the hospital gave us, won't take any other one. But unless it's what he wants he'll start gagging and spit it out.

My niece took one for the first 6ish weeks and then refused them after that. He might just be refusing them. It does make it easy not to have to wean off them later😉

Try the Ninni pacifier. You can only get them on their site but they have a breast like nipple and have good reviews. I got one for my baby

Their gagging will become normal, especially when they start foods, they have to figure out how far they can put things in their mouth and texture as well; I use the tommee tippee pacifiers along with the matching nipple tommee tippee bottles; I found all of mine at target
