Constipated! Can straining cause miscarriage/ preterm Labour?

I’m 21 weeks pregnant and am terribly constipated for 3 days now. I’ve been straining super hard and have now lower abdominal pain and cramps. Is this ok or do I need to worry? I just had my 20 weeks scan and all was fine but I m now worries.

No it cant do anything. I have severe constipation. Its awful.....drink lots of water and take stool softners daily to keep drawing moisture to the stools

Hi. I agree with Lara. Straining won't harm the baby. However, too much strain can cause abdominal pain and haemorrhoids for you. As the womb is stretching and your bowels are close by they easily get squashed or blocked with stools. I get severely constipated, too, and was so throughout my pregnancies (days where i wouldn't go for a week. What really worked for me was bran flakes or Al bran cereal in hot milk and some chia seeds that naturally softened my stools and I was going to the toilet more regularly (maybe miss a day or 2) but still going and stools were much softer and easier to pass. Hope this helps x

Take prune juice.. if that doesn’t work Boiled Spinach Apples 🍎 and banana Broccoli and carrot I hope this helps

Thank you so much for your words - it really helps with my worries ❤️

No it won’t harm the baby. However, try not to strain as it can cause other issues to yourself (not the baby). Best thing to do is keep active, stay well hydrated and eat lots of high fibre foods and whenever you feel the urge to go to the toilet, go and don’t hold it in
