Sleeping Bag & Room Temp

My baby is always kicking her blanket off in the night and then waking because she gets cold at all hours so today I got her a 1 tog sleeping bag. The room thermometer is reading between 20 and 21 degrees (mainly between 20.6 and 20.8) and that’s with the heating off. I tried googling but gives me lots of different answers. Some may say that she needs one with a bigger tog like 2 togs but then other websites tell me for my general room temperature that stays the same she should be in a 1 tog sleeping bag because she’ll have her short sleeved vest and babygrow on. Will she be okay tonight in her 1 tog sleeping bag? Don’t want her getting too hot. Sorry if this sound stupid, first time Mum 🥴🤣 Thank you

Yeah that should be fine to me hun. My lo sleeps in a vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 sleep bag, our room is between 16.5 and 18.5 (her cheeks and hands are always cold but her torso is always just right temp) Don't worry, it doesn't sound stupid and it's a very valid questions 😊 x

@Kelly thank you so much! I worry all the time honestly 🤣 i’m constantly checking to see if she’s too hot/cold but most of the time if she’s warm i think “oh is she hot or warm” 🤣 thank you. She’s in a vest, babygrow and her sleeping bag tonight x

If your worried could always try her in a long sleeve vest with 1tog sleeping bag and see how she gets on 🤷🏼‍♀️😊 x

I know what you mean, I'm the same. With the temp being 20-21 I'd be more concerned for overheating if she had vest, sleepsuit and a 3.5 tog. She should be just right in a 1 tog. X

@Kelly thank you! Yeah, i was thinking the same. Apparently 1 tog is equivalent to one light blanket and she normally sleeps with a blanket on anyway so it should be okay fingers crossed. Nothing scares me more than overheating, SIDS etc x

I’m like this with my LG! She’s fidgeting so much at the moment and kicking her blanket off in the night that and it’s keeping me awake, but I’m now wondering if she’s then fidgeting so much because she’s cold! So tonight I’ve got her in a sleepsuit and a 1.5tog sleep bag. Room temp is between 19.5 and 20.5! But I’m exactly the same- worry about overheating/ SIDS etc. so I doubt I’ll sleep tonight as she’s in the sleep bag and it’s new and I’m worrying about her getting too hot xx

@Leah it’s so hard isn’t it! Yeah, my baby does the same with her blanket and was frequently waking up in the night so maybe they are cold. Yeah, i won’t sleep tonight either i’ll constantly be checking her xx

Also @Leah @Kelly how do you guys check for baby’s temp? Do you feel down their back or their chest or the back of their neck? X

I've asked myself this question 100 times! I always err on the side of being too cold as, like you, stories of babies overheating terrifies me! My son went through the winter months in a 1 tog sleeping bag for that reason but more recently I've been putting him in a 2.5 tog bag, a short sleeved vest and a sleepsuit. Moved up to 2.5 tog as the room starts off at about 19/20 degrees but then gets colder overnight

@Mary thank you! Do you think she may get too cold then if she’s only in a 1 tog sleeping bag? She has got vest and babygrow on too so i’m really not sure

No that seems fine as your room temp is between 20 and 21 so 1 tog will be fine I think! I just used the 2.5 tog as my room falls to around 16/17 at night! :)

According to the little label that came with my 1 tog, you’ll be fine dressing her in that with that room temp I was always told too, babies will wake you up and let you know if they’re too chilly whereas less likely to wake you up if they’re too warm, so I always dress on the lighter side for that reason x

@Mary aw okay thank you so much :)

@Georgi ahh okay!! Thank you! I’m sure she’ll be fine, just a mum overthinking here 🤣 x

I’m exact the same. Our bedroom is usually between 18-19 degrees and I dress LO in a short sleeve vest, baby grow and 1 tog swaddle bag. I’m far too worried about him overheating. And to answer your other question, to check his temperature, I feel his chest and/or back if I can reach it without disturbing him too much.

I picked one picture, tried it out and if he seemed too warm or too cold I tried a different one that seemed colder or warmer 😅

That's what I dress mine and he's always fine, 1 tog definitely plenty warm enough now x
